About the Opportunity

Join the Central Coast Local Health District’s Suicide Prevention Services and use your lived experience to provide meaningful, non-clinical support to people experiencing suicidal distress. As a Suicide Prevention Peer Worker, you will work alongside consumers, families, carers and multidisciplinary teams to promote hope, connection and recovery through a trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approach. In this role you will:

  • Provide direct peer support to people experiencing suicidal crisis, drawing on your lived experience to foster hope, connection and empowerment.
  • Support people with recovery and wellness planning, helping them identify strengths, resources and pathways to ongoing support.
  • Work collaboratively with mental health clinicians, peer workers, consumers, families, carers and community services to support holistic outcomes.
  • Connect people with appropriate community and suicide prevention services and contribute to advocacy, service development and quality improvement activities.
  • Participate in evaluation, professional development, peer supervision and Communities of Practice to support the ongoing development of peer-led suicide prevention services.

About You

You will bring a genuine commitment to supporting people experiencing suicidal distress and the ability to use your lived experience thoughtfully, safely and purposefully to connect with others. You will be compassionate, collaborative and committed to recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and person-centred approaches. We are looking for someone who has:

  • Personal lived experience of suicidal crisis and the ability to use this experience meaningfully to provide peer support.
  • A Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer), or willingness to complete the qualification within 18 months of commencing.
  • Experience applying person-centred, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approaches when supporting people at risk of suicide.
  • An understanding of suicide prevention, including crisis support, safety planning and connecting people with appropriate services.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organisation and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to lived experience involvement and peer-led service delivery.

Applicants must have current work rights in Australia or be a permanent resident or citizen. Unfortunately, we cannot consider applicants who do not meet this requirement.
