Position Summary

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides skilled occupational therapy services to children under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist and in accordance with each child’s plan of care. The COTA uses play-based, developmentally appropriate activities to address functional goals, communicates regularly with the supervising OT and families, and completes timely, accurate documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide occupational therapy interventions under the supervision of the assigned Occupational Therapist and in accordance with the child’s plan of care.
  • Use engaging, age-appropriate activities to address goals related to fine motor and visual motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, play, coordination, regulation, and participation in daily routines.
  • Adapt activities, materials, and the level of support to meet each child’s needs while working toward established goals.
  • Monitor and document each child’s response to treatment, progress toward goals, and any barriers or changes that should be shared with the supervising OT.
  • Communicate with the supervising OT about progress, concerns, family updates, and the need for plan-of-care review.
  • Educate and support caregivers in carrying over appropriate strategies at home, within the limits of the plan of care.
  • Complete daily notes and other required documentation within Abil-OT’s established timelines, generally within 48 hours.
  • Maintain accurate records in the electronic medical record and follow clinic procedures for scheduling, attendance, billing support, and documentation.
  • Coordinate respectfully with families, therapists, administrative staff, and other members of the child’s care team, as appropriate.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and welcoming treatment space.
  • Attend required supervision, team meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Follow applicable state and federal requirements, payer rules, professional standards, and Abil-OT policies, including privacy and infection-control procedures.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the role.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Current North Carolina COTA license in good standing, or eligibility to obtain licensure before beginning clinical practice.
  • Current NBCOT certification, if required for North Carolina licensure or continued practice.
  • Experience working with children is preferred; pediatric outpatient or developmental experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication, organization, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to build positive, professional relationships with children, caregivers, and colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain required supervision and follow the supervising OT’s direction and the child’s plan of care.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records is preferred; experience with Fusion/Ensora is a plus.
  • Reliable transportation if occasional travel between Abil-OT locations is required.

Performance Expectations

  • Provide consistent, skilled, family-centered treatment.
  • Maintain a caseload and direct treatment schedule consistent with the position’s agreed-upon productivity expectations.
  • Complete documentation accurately and within required timelines.
  • Communicate promptly with the supervising OT regarding changes in a child’s status, safety concerns, progress, or barriers to treatment.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, teamwork, and openness to feedback.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to participate in floor-based and active play, move and set up therapy materials, and safely support children during treatment activities within the COTA’s training and role.
