What they need
Since 1984, Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgical Center (FCRS) has evolved into the largest single specialty group of colorectal surgeons in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro region. We have accomplished this by serving our patients, employees, and healthcare community with integrity, leadership, and commitment to excellence. Our mission is to provide the highest quality, innovative, coordinated colorectal care for all of our patients.
We are looking to add an additional Certified Professional Coder to our billing team: The Certified Professional Coder at Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery plays a critical role in ensuring accurate and compliant medical coding for surgical procedures. This position is responsible for translating complex surgical documentation into standardized codes used for billing, reimbursement, and statistical analysis. The coder must maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory requirements to optimize revenue cycle management and minimize claim denials. Collaboration with surgeons, billing staff, and compliance teams is essential to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies. Ultimately, this role supports the financial health of the surgery practice while ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards in medical coding.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential from AAPC or equivalent certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in medical coding, preferably within a surgical or procedural setting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures.
- Strong understanding of healthcare compliance, HIPAA regulations, and payer billing requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a surgery practice or hospital outpatient surgical department.
- Additional certifications such as Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC).
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software tools.
- Knowledge of revenue cycle management and medical billing processes.
- Strong analytical skills and experience with coding audits and quality assurance.
Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze surgical documentation to assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes.
- Ensure coding compliance with CMS guidelines, payer-specific rules, and industry standards.
- Collaborate with surgeons and clinical staff to clarify documentation and improve coding accuracy.
- Audit coded records regularly to identify and correct errors or inconsistencies.
- Assist in preparing for internal and external audits related to coding and billing practices.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding updates, regulatory changes, and best practices through continuous education.
- Support the billing department by providing coding expertise to reduce claim denials and improve reimbursement.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance coding workflows and documentation quality.
Skills:
The required skills enable the coder to accurately interpret surgical documentation and apply the correct codes, which is essential for proper billing and reimbursement. Strong knowledge of coding systems and medical terminology allows the coder to navigate complex clinical information efficiently. Communication skills are used daily to collaborate with surgeons and clinical staff to resolve documentation ambiguities and ensure compliance. Analytical skills support auditing processes and help identify trends or errors that could impact revenue or compliance. Preferred skills such as proficiency with EHR systems and additional certifications enhance the coder’s ability to work effectively within the practice’s technology environment and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
