What they need

  • Career track to CEO
  • Drive commercial performance through finance, estimating & fleet across a $100m+ civil and construction group
  • Brisbane or Toowoomba base with flexibility

Why You Will Be Excited About This Role
Utilise your broad commercial skills in this non-traditional CFO role with a career track to CEO. You will step into a newly created executive position in a privately owned civil and construction group, dealing directly with the CEO, Owners and Advisory Board. You will take enterprise-wide ownership of commercial performance, project profitability and financial insight.

Your impact will be highly visible. You will help the business identify project risk early, protect margins and help others make better commercial decisions as it continues to grow.

  • Drive greater visibility through key leading indicators of project P&Ls, forecasts, margins and commercial risk
  • Shape systems, dashboards and project review disciplines
  • Lead key business functions while influencing commercial performance across civil and construction

Success will mean stronger forecasting, earlier intervention on project issues and better commercial capability across the organisation.

Why Will You Like Working Here
With a turnover exceeding $100m, multiple concurrent projects and both civil infrastructure and commercial construction operations, there is genuine scale and complexity to influence - without the layers of a large corporate. Having a strong regional track record and influence the business generally targets projects around $5m–$10m, while selectively taking on larger work and having successfully delivered projects above $30m.

  • Practical, family-oriented and relationship-driven culture
  • Direct access to senior decision-makers
  • Brisbane or Toowoomba base, depending on your circumstances
  • Opportunity to help shape the next stage of growth and succession

What You Will Be Working On
Your role is to help the business see what is coming, not simply report what has already happened.

You will strengthen forecasting, cost control and project-commercial discipline across the group, bringing together project performance, programmes, contracts, financial information and risk.

Your priorities will include:

  • Improving forecast accuracy, cost control and margin visibility by reporting on key lead indicators that matter
  • Supporting and developing disciplined commercial reviews across multiple projects
  • Identifying project slippage and commercial risk early
  • Strengthening contract, investment and capital governance
  • Building practical dashboards and integrating project and financial information
  • Improving visibility around fleet ownership, utilisation and recovery
  • Developing commercial, finance and project capability across the business

What Type of Person Will Be Successful
You will combine senior-level commercial judgement with a willingness to get into the detail when it matters. Your financial background has seen you gravitate towards leading rather than lag indicators but you still know how to manage and develop the finance team for compliance and reporting matters.

You are likely to come from civil infrastructure, construction, contracting or another project-based environment where project margins, contracts and forecasting are central to performance.

You will bring:

  • Senior commercial or financial leadership experience
  • Strong project P&L, forecasting, contract and margin capability
  • Experience leading and developing finance and commercial teams
  • Confidence in challenging, and changing poor information or weak decisions
  • Strong financial literacy and executive-level communication skills
  • The ability to turn project detail into clear, actionable commercial insight

Qualifications may come from construction management, quantity surveying, law, accounting or finance. More important is deep hands-on construction-commercial experience.

Relevant backgrounds may include Commercial Director, CFO, Head of Commercial or senior project-commercial leadership roles.

How to Apply
You do not need to match every requirement perfectly. Strong construction-commercial experience, sound judgement and the ability to influence at all levels will matter most.
