Help shape the future of local Scouting
Your skills and ideas could help young people build confidence, discover new interests and gain skills for life.
9th Southampton City Scouts is looking for volunteers to join our Trustee Board. We support Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, providing opportunities for friendship, adventure and personal development.
As a trustee, you’ll help make sure our charity is well managed, safe and sustainable, supporting the volunteers who deliver these experiences.
Opportunities available
We welcome applications for general trustee roles and roles with a particular focus on:
- Governance: Help oversee policies, compliance, accountability and good decision making.
- Health & safety: Help the board oversee risks and seek assurance that appropriate safety arrangements are in place and working.
- Community connections: Help strengthen local relationships, identify potential partnerships and bring community perspectives into our plans.
You don’t need a specialist background to apply for a general trustee role. Whatever your focus, all trustees share responsibility for the charity and contribute to the board’s decisions.
What you’ll do
Working alongside fellow trustees, you’ll:
- Help shape the group’s priorities and future plans.
- Review finances and support responsible use of funds, property and equipment.
- Help oversee risks, policies and the group’s legal and Scouting responsibilities.
- Attend board meetings, read papers and contribute to discussions.
- Bring ideas, ask constructive questions and help make informed decisions.
- Keep young people’s interests at the heart of the group’s governance.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need previous Scouting or trustee experience. We’re looking for people who:
- Want to make a positive difference for local young people.
- Can work collaboratively and consider different perspectives.
- Are willing to learn and take their trustee responsibilities seriously.
- Can commit time to meetings, preparation and agreed tasks.
- Bring sound judgement, useful experience or a fresh perspective.
Experience in governance, health and safety, finance, property, charities or community partnerships would be welcome, but is not essential for every role.
What you’ll gain
- The opportunity to make a lasting difference in your community.
- Experience of charity governance and shared decision making.
- Opportunities to develop skills and meet other volunteers.
- Induction, relevant learning and support to help you settle into the role.
Inclusion and accessibility
We welcome people from all backgrounds and value different experiences and perspectives. Please let us know if you need reasonable adjustments during the application process or to support your volunteering.
Joining requirements
Applicants must be aged 18 or over and eligible to act as a charity trustee. Appointment is subject to the Scouts’ selection and joining processes, including trustee eligibility checks, a trustee declaration, a DBS check and required learning.

Email [email protected] with a short introduction explaining:
- Why you’d like to join our Trustee Board.
- Any skills or experience you’d like to share.
- Whether you’re interested in a general role or one of the focus areas.
