Chess Instructor

Chess Instructor

The Learning Planet is looking for people who want to make a positive difference in the lives of youth. We bring chess into schools and after-school programs, helping youth build focus, patience, and critical thinking — one move at a time. Come teach with us!

Please note the total time commitment is longer due to setup and cleanup. Prorated compensation may be provided depending on the schedule.

You'll be a great fit if you:

• Play chess! You don't have to be a master-level player, but you do need interest and enthusiasm.
• Want to work with youth and young kids in a small-group teaching setting (ages 5–12).
• Are available part-time during "after-school" hours.
• Have experience as a camp counselor, tutor, teacher, coach, after-school instructor, or preschool teacher.
• Are comfortable driving and have a flexible schedule.

You'll receive thorough, paid training on how to help students learn chess in a small-group setting — no coaching experience required.

Qualifications

• Knowledgeable in the rules and basic strategy of chess, or willing to learn
• Experience or interest in working with young students (small-group tutoring experience is great; classroom experience is a plus!)
• Must have reliable vehicle for transportation between school sites
• Ability to lift 10-25 lbs of teaching equipment

Responsibilities

• Manage a classroom of 10–20 students
• Use our curriculum to demonstrate and clearly communicate all basic rules (piece movement, castling, check, checkmate, etc.) and beginner strategy
• Promote good sportsmanship and a positive learning environment
• Responsibly store, transport, and maintain all teaching equipment and materials
• Communicate professionally with staff and parents as needed
