What they need
Chief Engineer, Medium-Voltage Switchgear
Location: U.S. Remote
Salary: $260,000 to $310,000 per year, plus equity
Reports to: VP Engineering
Type: Full-time
The role
A venture-backed startup building critical infrastructure for AI and mission-critical compute is developing next-generation electrical equipment. You will own the medium-voltage switchgear product: define standard lineups, specifications, and vendor relationships that scale across multi-gigawatt deployments.
This is the electrical product lead role. You write and enforce specifications, manage vendor engineering and FAT, drive protection coordination studies, and feed the product roadmap. You work at startup velocity with engineering discipline.
What you will be doing
- Own the MV switchgear product lineup, specifications, ratings, and configurations across all deployments
- Write and maintain comprehensive switchgear specifications covering bus ratings, breaker duty, protection, metering, arc-resistant construction, and interface requirements
- Lead vendor engineering: review drawings, run factory acceptance tests, close technical exceptions before release
- Deliver short-circuit and arc-flash studies for the medium-voltage system and set relay protection settings for commissioning
- Drive vendor qualification for switchgear, breakers, and protection relays without reopening design each iteration
- Build the product roadmap: evaluate solid-state breakers, higher-voltage options, and emerging technology for cost and schedule impact
- Translate field and commissioning findings into design changes for production builds
What we need from you
- 10 or more years in electrical engineering on medium-voltage switchgear, either designing at an OEM or specifying and commissioning for mission-critical facilities
- Hands-on experience with metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear, vacuum circuit breakers, protection relays, arc-resistant designs
- Run short-circuit, arc-flash, and coordination studies in ETAP, SKM, or equivalent and set relay protection from them
- Working knowledge of IEEE C37, IEC 62271, and NEC requirements for medium-voltage installations
- Reviewed vendor submittals and run factory acceptance tests. You know which exceptions matter and which you can close
- Write specifications that vendors can bid competitively without meetings or clarifications
- Comfortable with high-density electrical loads and the margin management they require
