What they need

Hospice Mid-Northland (HMN) is seeking an exceptional Chief Executive to lead a highly respected organisation dedicated to providing compassionate, community-based specialist palliative care.

This is a unique opportunity to lead an organisation that makes a profound difference in the lives of patients and their whānau every day. Working closely with a committed Board, an experienced leadership team, dedicated staff and volunteers, you will help shape the future of hospice care across the Mid North.

About the Role

As Chief Executive, you will provide strategic and operational leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality specialist palliative care while maintaining the long-term sustainability of the organisation. You will be responsible for ensuring strong financial stewardship, effective governance, and sustainable growth across all areas of the organisation.

The role includes overseeing the performance and development of the organisation's retail operations, ensuring they maximise revenue and contribute to the organisation's financial sustainability. You will foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration while building strong relationships with staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and key stakeholders to support the organisation's mission and strategic objectives.

You will lead the implementation of strategic priorities, foster a positive organisational culture, strengthen partnerships across the health sector and community, and ensure the organisation continues to deliver outstanding care that reflects their values and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Provide visionary leadership and implement the strategic direction set by the Board.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, community-based specialist palliative care services.
  • Build and maintain a high-performing, engaged organisational culture.
  • Lead financial stewardship, budgeting, reporting, and long-term sustainability.
  • Negotiate and maintain funding arrangements with Te Whatu Ora and other funding partners.
  • Develop strong relationships with iwi, hapū, whānau, community organisations, government agencies, donors, and healthcare partners.
  • Support effective governance through high-quality advice and reporting to the Board.
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative, regulatory, clinical, and health and safety requirements.
  • Champion continuous improvement, innovation, and organisational excellence.
  • Act as the public face and ambassador for hospice.

About You

You are an experienced executive who combines strategic thinking with compassionate, values-based leadership.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience in a Chief Executive or senior leadership role.
  • Strong strategic planning and organisational leadership capability.
  • Demonstrated financial management and commercial acumen.
  • Experience working effectively with Boards and governance structures.
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
  • Success in leading organisational change and developing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • A commitment to culturally responsive leadership and a genuine understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and partnership with Māori.
  • Experience in healthcare, not-for-profit, community services, or another complex service environment will be highly regarded.

Why Join Us?

This is more than a Chief Executive position—it is an opportunity to lead an organisation that is trusted, respected, and deeply valued by its community.

You will work alongside passionate staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners who are united by a shared commitment to ensuring people facing life-limiting illness receive compassionate, specialist care close to home.

If you are an authentic, strategic leader who is inspired by purpose and motivated to make a meaningful difference, we would welcome your application.
