About the role

PHF Science (the New Zealand Institute for Public Health and Forensic Science) is a New Zealand Public Research Organisation (PRO). Our purpose is to support communities to be safer, fairer and better prepared. We are the specialists in public health and forensic science and are critical partners with government agencies and regulators in the health and justice sectors, as well as community organisations, Māori, universities and other research institutions and private sector organisations. Our science services, research, and innovation underpin the delivery of the following impacts:

• better health outcomes,
• safer communities and a stronger justice system,
• and greater value from science.

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive provides enterprise leadership across PHF Science’s people, science capability, infrastructure, partnerships, financial sustainability, reputation and impact. The Chief Executive is responsible for ensuring the institute operates with scientific integrity, public accountability, commercial discipline and with a clear focus on outcomes for New Zealanders.

With relevant leadership experience, and a deep understanding of science, public health and/or forensic science, the Chief Executive will demonstrate the profile, ambition and talent to deliver a long-term strategy that will enhance PHF Science’s impact, reputation and network of relationships.

Working at the intersection of science and the community, this role offers an unrivalled opportunity to lead the development of an integrated, commercial and high-performing delivery model, whilst also playing a pivotal role in enabling research translation and enhancing outcomes for the community and our partners.

With excellent influencing, collaboration and communication skills, candidates will bring experience in building and maintaining relationships across a complex range of internal and external stakeholders. Candidates should also exhibit a record of delivering substantial outcomes, including commercial achievement, in senior leadership.

The new Chief Executive must demonstrate the ability to think creatively, take initiative and exercise effective judgment in a dynamic environment and, in doing so, inspire others to partner in the ambitions and aspirations of PHF Science.
