What they need

Chief Maintenance Engineer

Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton – Grandville / Grand Rapids, MI

Job Summary

The Chief Maintenance Engineer is responsible for leading the Maintenance Department and maintaining the overall condition, functionality, safety, and appearance of the hotel.

This is a hands-on leadership position requiring strong troubleshooting abilities and general maintenance knowledge. The Chief Maintenance Engineer should be comfortable performing and coordinating repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, painting, carpentry, hotel equipment, fixtures, and general building maintenance.

The Chief Maintenance Engineer works closely with hotel leadership and all departments to ensure the property remains well maintained and that maintenance concerns affecting our guests or team members are addressed promptly.

This position leads the Maintenance Department under the Executive Housekeeper and is expected to work independently while also collaborating effectively with the hotel management team and other departments.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the hotel Maintenance Department.
  • Maintain the exterior of the building, parking lot, landscaping-related areas, entrances, and common areas.
  • Maintain and repair equipment, fixtures, furniture, and systems in guestrooms and public areas.
  • Perform routine troubleshooting and repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance.
  • Complete and document preventative maintenance in guestrooms, public areas, mechanical spaces, and other areas of the property.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance assignments are completed accurately and within established timeframes.
  • Respond promptly to guestroom maintenance requests and operational maintenance concerns.
  • Conduct routine property and equipment inspections to identify maintenance concerns before they become larger problems.
  • Assist with monthly safety inspections and help ensure maintenance-related safety concerns are corrected.
  • Assist hotel leadership with employee training related to safety, emergency procedures, and proper equipment operation when appropriate.
  • Maintain hotel tools, equipment, maintenance supplies, and work areas in an organized and professional manner.
  • Identify repairs or projects that require outside contractors and coordinate with approved vendors and hotel leadership.
  • Communicate clearly with vendors regarding repairs, service appointments, parts, and project needs.
  • Follow up on outsourced repairs to ensure work has been completed properly.
  • Work closely with Housekeeping, Front Desk, Breakfast, and hotel management to ensure maintenance needs are addressed and guest expectations are met.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, preventative maintenance documentation, inspection records, and other required maintenance logs.
  • Prioritize maintenance projects based on guest impact, safety, urgency, and operational needs.
  • Assist with special projects, renovations, installations, and other property improvement projects as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and professional maintenance workspace.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, property condition, and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance situations and property emergencies when necessary, including situations that may occur outside normally scheduled working hours.
  • Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned by hotel leadership.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous hotel, commercial building, apartment, facilities, or general maintenance experience.
  • Strong general maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, painting, equipment repair, and general building maintenance.
  • Ability to identify problems, determine appropriate solutions, and complete repairs safely.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple maintenance priorities.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with guests, employees, management, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Reliable attendance and the ability to respond appropriately to urgent maintenance situations.
  • Previous maintenance leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.

Language

Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements

This is an active, hands-on maintenance position. The Chief Maintenance Engineer must be able to perform the physical functions normally associated with hotel maintenance, including:

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and climbing as necessary.
  • Using ladders and maintenance tools safely.
  • Moving and handling maintenance equipment, supplies, furniture, and other materials.
  • Working in guestrooms, public areas, mechanical areas, exterior areas, and other areas throughout the hotel.

Reasonable accommodations may be provided as required by applicable law.

Schedule & Availability

The Chief Maintenance Engineer must have scheduling flexibility based on the operational needs of the hotel.

Because this position is responsible for the overall maintenance of the property, the Chief Maintenance Engineer must also be willing and able to respond to urgent maintenance situations and emergencies outside of regularly scheduled hours when necessary.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work and understands that a well-maintained hotel directly affects the guest experience.

The right candidate will be dependable, organized, proactive, comfortable troubleshooting problems independently, and able to recognize maintenance concerns before they become major issues.
