About Altar City Church

Altar City Church is a fast growing growing, Spirit-filled church plant in Lynchburg, Virginia, transitioning into a permanent building. We are passionate about raising up disciples of Jesus who know God’s Word, experience His presence, and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. This role is intended to start part time, and become full-time as church grows.

We believe there is no junior Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit who moves in adults is at work in children. We want our kids to encounter Jesus, hear His voice, understand Scripture, discover their spiritual gifts, and grow in a genuine relationship with God.

Position Overview

We are seeking a spiritually mature, passionate, and relational Kids Ministry Director to lead Altar City Kids. This person will build and equip volunteer leaders, oversee Sunday ministry, and cultivate a safe, engaging, Spirit-led environment where children can encounter God and grow as disciples.

This is more than a Sunday morning position. We are looking for someone who considers Altar City their church family and is invested in its mission and long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

Spiritual Leadership & Curriculum

• Develop engaging, biblically sound, age-appropriate weekly lessons rooted in Scripture and led by the Holy Spirit.
• Create opportunities for children to worship, pray, encounter God’s presence, and learn about spiritual gifts.
• Equip volunteers to minister confidently, recognizing that children can genuinely experience and respond to the Holy Spirit.
• Watch the weekly sermon after serving to remain connected to the spiritual direction of the church.
• Assist lead pastors and elders with admin tasks

Team Building & Development

• Recruit, train, encourage, and equip children’s ministry volunteers and future leaders.
• Conduct intake calls with prospective volunteers and coordinate onboarding, background checks, and safety training.
• Maintain volunteer schedules and develop a trained backup leader.
• Lead a monthly team meeting in place of one regularly scheduled directors meeting.

Sunday Operations & Safety

• Oversee children’s ministry during our single 10:30 AM Sunday service.
• Maintain a welcoming, secure, and easy-to-use child check-in and check-out process.
• Enforce child protection policies, appropriate supervision, and emergency procedures.
• Communicate effectively with parents and volunteers.
• Ensure children’s ministry areas are clean, picked up, and organized after service.
• Complete building closing procedures and lock up the church following Sunday activities.
• As we transition into our permanent building, regular setup and teardown responsibilities will change.

Church Involvement & Accountability

• Attend weekly directors meetings and collaborate with church leadership.
• Participate in the women’s group for personal discipleship, spiritual growth, and community.
• Remain actively involved in church life, special services, and church-wide events.
• Demonstrate spiritual maturity, teachability, accountability, and a servant’s heart.

Compensation: $20/hour

Qualifications

• A growing relationship with Jesus and a commitment to Spirit-filled ministry, spiritual gifts, and biblical discipleship.
• Experience working with children and leading or developing ministry volunteers.
• Strong organizational, relational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Must live in Lynchburg year-round and be consistently available for church responsibilities.
• Must provide excellent personal and ministry references and pass required background checks.
• Must align with Altar City Church’s doctrine, values, and vision.
• Must be humble and coachable
