What they need

CHILDREN'S PERSONAL ASSISTANT / SUPPORT WORKER

Reference Number VAC/0926/07300

Closing Date 04/10/2026

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who wants to make a real difference to the life of a young child and his family.

You will have the opportunity to help my son experience the community, discover new activities, develop his confidence and enjoy the things he loves, while also providing our family with much-needed support and respite. If you are kind, energetic, patient, reliable, creative and willing to learn, I would love to hear from you.

About the role

I am looking for a caring, reliable, energetic and proactive Personal Assistant (PA) to support my four-year-old son. My son is a happy, energetic and sensory-seeking little boy who is currently non-verbal and does not yet have a formal diagnosis.

He experiences the world in his own unique way and needs someone who is patient, understanding, observant and willing to learn how best to communicate with and support him.

The main purpose of this role is to help him safely explore the world around him, access the community and enjoy meaningful activities. He particularly loves being outdoors, including visiting parks, woods and open spaces. He thrives when he can move freely, explore his environment and engage in sensory-rich activities.

He requires constant supervision to keep him safe, as he is very fast and may run off unexpectedly. He can also display behaviours such as headbutting, both when he is happy and when he is dysregulated so understanding his needs and triggers will be an important part of the role.

The role will also provide valuable respite for our family and help us to access the community more confidently.

The kind of person I am looking for:

The right person will be kind, patient, encouraging and calm, with a genuine interest in supporting a child with additional needs.

You will ideally:

  • Have experience supporting an autistic child or a child with additional needs, although the right personality, attitude and approach are most important.
  • Be physically active, quick and able to keep up with an energetic young child.
  • Be calm, observant and confident when responding to changing behaviours.
  • Be creative and able to adapt activities according to my son's interests and needs.
  • Be flexible and extremely reliable, as consistency is very important to him.
  • Have a good sense of humour and be able to enjoy the fun and rewarding moments of the role.
  • Be willing to learn and develop your understanding of his communication, sensory needs and behaviour.
  • Be a driver with a clean driving licence and access to your own vehicle with appropriate business-use motor.

What you can expect from me:

I want this to be a positive and rewarding role, and I will provide:

  • A friendly and welcoming working environment where you will feel valued.
  • Access to training and learning opportunities.
  • The opportunity to make a genuine and positive difference in my son's life.
  • 5.6 weeks' annual leave (pro rata).
  • Access to an Employment Support Scheme.

Days and Times required:

4 hours per week.

Support is required either:

Option 1 – Before school: Monday–Thursday, 8:00am–9:00am, helping my son get ready and supporting him to get to school.

Option 2 – After school: Monday–Thursday, 11:30am–12:30pm, supporting him after school.

Necessary Training

The following training will be required and can be completed as part of your induction:

  • PA Induction Certificate.
  • Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) training.

You do not need to have completed these before applying, as support will be provided to complete the required training.
