Chiller Operator

Position Summary
Operates, maintains and troubleshoots air-cooled and water-cooled chiller plants and the associated chilled-water system. Keeps the plant reliable and efficient, carries out PPM per schedule, and responds immediately to breakdowns.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate chillers, CHW pumps and associated equipment per approved sequences and load demand.
• Record plant readings each shift: suction/discharge pressures, oil pressure, amps, CHW supply/return temperatures, approach and flow.
• Carry out monthly, quarterly and semi-annual PPM on chillers and CHW pumps per the approved forms and schedule.
• Clean condenser coils (air-cooled) and tubes (water-cooled), and check fans, motors and belts.
• Diagnose and repair faults in compressors (scroll, screw, reciprocating), EXV/TXV, sensors, flow switches and control boards.
• Perform refrigerant recovery, leak detection, nitrogen pressure testing, evacuation and charging.
• Replace or overhaul compressors, and test run with readings recorded.
• Check oil level and condition, and replace oil and filter driers as required.
• Maintain CHW pumps: alignment, vibration, mechanical seals, bearings and strainers.
• Support the chemical treatment programme and water quality checks (pH, conductivity, TDS, hardness).
• Respond to chiller alarms from the BMS and local panel, and verify sequencing and the CHW flow enable logic.
• Coordinate with the OEM/agent for advanced faults and software issues.
• Complete daily logs, PPM checklists and breakdown reports, including findings, actions and spare parts used.
• Follow HSE rules, permit-to-work and safe refrigerant handling procedures.

Qualifications

• Diploma or technical certificate in Mechanical/HVAC/Refrigeration.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on chiller maintenance experience, with at least 2 years in the GCC (Qatar preferred).
• Experience with Carrier, Trane, York, McQuay/Daikin or Zamil chillers.
• Experience in critical 24/7 facilities is an advantage.

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of the refrigeration cycle, superheat/subcooling and normal operating pressures for R134a, R410A, R407C and R22.
• Chiller control panels and error codes, with VFD/inverter basics.
• Brazing, leak repair and the correct use of N₂ while brazing.
• Using a gauge manifold, vacuum pump, recovery unit, leak detector, clamp meter and megger.
• Reading electrical wiring diagrams and P&IDs.
• Basic BMS knowledge (monitoring, alarms, trending).

Other Requirements

• Valid QID and transferable visa, or ready to join on company sponsorship.
• Refrigerant handling certification is an advantage.
• Good English; Arabic is an advantage.
• Willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and emergency call-outs.
• Qatar driving licence is an advantage.
• Subject to client technical interview and approval before deployment.
