About Appen
Appen is a global provider of high-quality data for the AI lifecycle. We work with organisations to support the development and improvement of artificial intelligence through data collection, annotation, evaluation and related services. Our teams help transform real-world information into reliable data that supports the training and performance of AI systems.
Project Overview
We are looking for a Chinese Short Drama Content Data Annotator with strong Mandarin-language comprehension and familiarity with Mainland Chinese short-form drama content. The role focuses on reviewing drama content, validating genre and thematic annotations, and coaching annotators to apply project guidelines consistently. The work supports the quality of data used to train and refine machine-learning models for video-content understanding.
Key Responsibilities
- Review Chinese short dramas and accurately identify genres, themes, plot elements, character relationships and other defined content labels.
- Perform quality assurance on annotations to identify errors, inconsistencies, omissions and cases requiring clarification.
- Coach annotators on project guidelines and provide clear, actionable feedback to improve annotation accuracy and consistency.
- Interpret Mandarin dialogue, colloquial expressions, idioms and culturally specific references where they affect content classification.
- Document annotation decisions, recurring issues, quality findings and examples of common errors.
- Escalate ambiguous or complex cases and collaborate with project managers and team members to resolve them.
- Monitor quality benchmarks and recommend improvements to annotation guidelines, workflows and quality-control processes.
- Meet project quality, productivity and reporting expectations while handling detailed and repetitive review tasks.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or above; qualifications in Chinese Language, Linguistics, Translation, Media Studies, Film Studies or a related field are advantageous.
- Strong written and spoken Mandarin Chinese, including the ability to understand dialogue, colloquial language and culturally specific references in Mainland Chinese content.
- Demonstrated familiarity with Chinese short dramas and their common genres, storytelling conventions, character archetypes and thematic patterns.
- Good command of English or Bahasa Malaysia for documentation, reporting and collaboration with colleagues.
- Strong analytical thinking, logical reasoning, comprehension and attention to detail.
- Ability to explain classification decisions clearly and apply guidelines consistently.
- Ability to focus on detailed, repetitive tasks while maintaining accuracy and productivity.
- Adaptability and willingness to learn about AI data processing, annotation tools and machine-learning data quality standards.
- Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with remote or distributed teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in quality assurance for data annotation, content moderation, linguistic review or video-content evaluation.
- Experience coaching team members, resolving annotation disagreements or maintaining quality reports.
- Familiarity with annotation taxonomies, quality metrics or AI training-data workflows.
- Regular engagement with Chinese short-form drama content, with the ability to discuss examples and explain genre or theme distinctions.
Candidate Assessment
Candidates may be asked to complete a job-related assessment covering Chinese short-drama genre and theme classification, interpretation of selected Mandarin dialogue, review of sample annotations, identification of quality issues and written explanation of recommended corrections. The same relevant criteria should be applied consistently to all candidates.
Benefits
Benefits and employment terms will be shared during the recruitment process and will be subject to the applicable employment arrangement and company policy.
