Job Overview

The City of Munising is seeking a strategic, innovative City Manager/DPW Director to lead its idyllic waterfront community on Lake Superior’s southern coast in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Munising is a city with around 1,950 residents and the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Hiawatha National Forest, and Grand Island, welcoming around a million visitors a year. Working under a five-member City Commission in a commission/manager form of government, you will oversee a $7.7 million overall budget, 23 full-time employees, and city services including water, wastewater, a marina, and a campground. In addition to managing city operations, you will serve as DPW director and zoning administrator, and help guide priorities such as the $6.9 million Washington Street redevelopment, lead service line replacement, a master plan update, and managing the city’s pension liability and housing needs.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, or a related field (experience may be substituted for education), plus three years of governmental management experience or five years in business management or equivalent. A valid driver’s license is required, and residency is preferred. We are looking for someone with solid government finance and budgeting experience, labor relations and negotiation skills, a track record of acquiring and managing grants, and an understanding of economic and community development, including housing, placemaking, and branding. Experience with DPW operations, zoning administration, code enforcement, municipal accounting software (B&SA a plus), and intergovernmental collaboration is highly valued. The ideal candidate is approachable, communicates well, builds shared visions, and is committed to volunteerism and community participation.

Compensation: The salary range is $95,000 to $110,000, with a retirement plan that includes an 8 percent employer contribution plus an additional 2 percent if the employee matches 2 percent.
