Civil Construction Estimator

Civil Estimator Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Civil Estimator to join our heavy civil construction team. The Civil Estimator will prepare accurate cost estimates for earthworks, utilities, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects to support bidding and project planning. The role requires strong construction knowledge, proficiency in quantity takeoffs, and the ability to collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to produce competitive, compliant proposals.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and site data for heavy civil projects (earthwork, grading, utilities, paving, erosion control, structures).
• Prepare comprehensive cost estimates including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor pricing, and indirect costs to produce bid-ready proposals.
• Analyze project drawings and specifications to identify scope gaps, constructability issues, risks, and opportunities for value engineering.
• Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and vendor quotations; build and maintain supplier and subcontractor relationships to ensure competitive pricing.
• Develop and maintain estimating databases, cost libraries, unit rates, and historical bid records to support consistent, data-driven estimates.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and scheduling teams to align estimates with project schedules, site constraints, and execution plans.
• Prepare bid packages, quantity summaries, estimate narratives, and risk registers for internal review and client submissions.
• Assist in post-bid analysis and support negotiations, clarifications, and contract award processes.
• Stay current with industry costs, market trends, and production rates to update estimating assumptions and unit costs.
• Mentor junior estimators and contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes, templates, and QA/QC procedures.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, or equivalent construction estimating experience.
• 5+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction (roads, utilities, earthwork, bridges, or related infrastructure projects).
• Proven experience as an Estimator with strong skills in quantity takeoffs, cost modeling, and bid preparation.
• Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., HCSS HeavyBid, Trimble, On-Screen Takeoff) and Microsoft Excel; experience with scheduling software is a plus.
• Strong understanding of construction means and methods, equipment production rates, labor costing, and subcontractor markets.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and build supplier relationships.
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and comfortable working under bid deadlines.
• Valid drivers license and willingness to visit project sites as required.
