Substation Civil Designer (Civil 3D)

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Substation Civil Designer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will use AutoCAD Civil 3D to design and develop comprehensive civil engineering plans for High-Voltage (HV) and Extra-High-Voltage (EHV) electrical substations. You will collaborate closely with structural engineers, electrical designers, and project managers to deliver grading plans, drainage designs, and foundation layouts that meet client standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Civil 3D Modeling: Create detailed 3D surfaces, corridors, and earthwork models specifically for electrical substation sites.
• Site Layout & Grading: Design site grading, drainage systems, retention/detention ponds, and access roads utilizing Civil 3D grading tools.
• Erosion & Sediment Control: Develop Erosion and Sediment Pollution Control (ESPC) plans and Stormwater Management (SWM) details.
• Drawing Package Production: General arrangement drawings, foundation location plans, oil containment system designs, and fencing/fencing grounding layouts.
• Quantity Take-offs: Compute accurate earthwork volumes (cut and fill) and material quantities using Civil 3D.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with Electrical Designers to ensure civil designs accommodate conduit banks, grounding grids, and heavy equipment placements (transformers, breakers).
• Quality Control: Ensure all designs comply with company standards, client preferences, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and local environmental/permitting regulations.

Required Qualifications

• Experience: 3+ years of professional experience in civil design, with a strong focus on electrical substation projects or heavy industrial site development.
• Software Expertise: Advanced, proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D (including surfaces, alignments, grading objects, and pipe networks).
• Education: Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting/Design, or equivalent technical work experience.
• Technical Skills:
• Strong understanding of civil site development, hydrology, and stormwater management concepts.
• Ability to read and interpret topographic surveys, geotechnical reports, and structural drawings.
• Soft Skills: Strong communication skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
