What they need

Position Overview

We are seeking a Civil Designer with hands-on experience preparing civil engineering designs and construction documents for land development and infrastructure projects.

This role focuses on roadway layouts, site grading, storm drainage, water distribution, sanitary sewer systems, and the development of detailed civil construction plans.

The ideal candidate has strong AutoCAD skills, understands practical civil design principles, and can independently perform technical design assignments under the direction of project engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare civil design plans for residential, commercial, and infrastructure development projects.
  • Develop roadway horizontal alignments, vertical profiles, and associated geometric design elements.
  • Apply relevant AASHTO roadway design criteria.
  • Create grading plans, contours, three-dimensional terrain models, and TIN surfaces.
  • Perform earthwork calculations, including cut-and-fill quantities, shrink, swell, and over-excavation considerations.
  • Process topographic survey points and coordinate survey information using CAD, Excel, and CSV files.
  • Import, export, and geolocate CAD data, including KML and KMZ files.
  • Assist with hydrologic and hydraulic calculations for storm drainage systems.
  • Develop water distribution layouts and support system modeling using EPANET or comparable software.
  • Prepare gravity sewer layouts, profiles, pipe sizing calculations, and supporting construction details.
  • Prepare plan and profile sheets, cross-sections, grading exhibits, and utility plans.
  • Support engineering reports, calculations, and technical submittals for governing agencies.
  • Coordinate with engineers and drafters to maintain drawing accuracy, design consistency, and project deadlines.
  • Revise engineering plans based on internal reviews, agency comments, and project requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant civil design experience, preferably in land development.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and civil design software.
  • Experience preparing grading, drainage, roadway, and underground utility plans.
  • Understanding of roadway geometry, elevations, alignments, profiles, and cross-sections.
  • Ability to create and manipulate TIN surfaces and terrain models.
  • Familiarity with earthwork calculations and grading design principles.
  • Experience interpreting topographic surveys and engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for technical calculations and data management.
  • Ability to prepare accurate civil construction drawings with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and technical problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Drafting, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or comparable civil design platforms.
  • Familiarity with HEC-RAS, HEC-1, EPANET, or similar engineering software.
  • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic calculations.
  • Knowledge of Arizona land development design standards.
  • Experience preparing documentation for municipal or agency approvals.
  • Familiarity with Excel automation, CAD scripts, or AutoLISP.
  • Experience working directly with civil engineers, surveyors, and other technical consultants.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual base salary: 65,000–80,000.
  • Compensation determined by experience, technical capabilities, and practical design proficiency.

Additional Information

Applicants should be comfortable completing a practical AutoCAD skills assessment as part of the evaluation process.

This is a full-time, on-site position in Phoenix, Arizona.
