Job Summary:

We’re looking for three experienced truck drivers to join our Christchurch heavy haulage team. With a big pipeline of projects ahead, this is a great opportunity to join a growing team and secure ongoing work. If you hold a Class 5 licence and BESS certification and have experience with heavy haulage or over-dimension loads, we'd like to hear from you.

This role suits someone who is safety-focused, reliable, and takes pride in doing the job properly. You'll be comfortable working as part of a team, communicating with customers and colleagues, and using your initiative when required. A good understanding of vehicle maintenance, transport compliance, and completing paperwork accurately is also important.

About Us:

Smith Crane and Construction is a family-owned business with over 30 years of experience, offering exceptional service across crane hire, civil construction (including marine civil and pre-cast manufacturing), transportation, and wind energy installation and maintenance. We pride ourselves on our strong team culture, commitment to safety, and continuing our family tradition of excellent customer focus and job execution.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Transport plant and equipment safely and efficiently to and from worksites.
  • Complete daily vehicle checks, reporting any defects, maintenance requirements, or compliance issues.
  • Assist with truck servicing, trailer maintenance, and the upkeep of load restraint equipment.
  • Support the mobilisation, demobilisation, and setup of trucks, plant, and machinery.
  • Inspect lifting and rigging gear, reporting any defects to the Site Supervisor.
  • Assist with lifting operations by following lift plans, communicating effectively, and using correct signalling.
  • Load, unload, inspect, and securely restrain machinery and equipment in line with best practice.
  • Maintain accurate logbooks and transport documentation.
  • Assist with route planning and ensure all transport activities are completed safely and efficiently.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Current BESS certification, or the ability and willingness to obtain BESS certification.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience operating Class 5 heavy haulage vehicles and/or transporting over-dimension loads.
  • Experience in the construction or infrastructure sector preferred
  • Current New Zealand Class 5 Driver Licence with W, T and R endorsements, or an equivalent international licence that can be converted to the required New Zealand licences and endorsements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with customers, site personnel, and team members.
  • Ability to work safely and comply with transport regulations, company procedures, and health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow operational instructions.

What We Offer:

  • Pay rate: $38.00 - $45.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
  • Overtime rates: time and a half after 40 hours worked per week
  • Location: Christchurch
  • Positions available: 3
  • Minimum guaranteed: 40 hours per week
  • Join a team with a strong pipeline of projects locked in through 2027
  • Join a supportive, down-to-earth team
  • Opportunity to grow your career and industry knowledge
  • Join an industry leader in NZ Construction projects
