What they need

About this position

The Sandbox Child Development Center

The Classroom Coordinator is responsible for the daily flow, staffing, and coverage of classrooms at The Sandbox. The primary focus of this role is building efficient staff schedules, securing cost-effective coverage for absences, and stepping into classrooms directly as a primary floating substitute. Additionally, this role maintains full compliance with North Carolina Childcare regulations, assists with essential afternoon closing routines, and supports kitchen and facility operations.

Core Responsibilities

Classroom Coverage & Scheduling (Primary Focus)

  • Master Schedule Management: Build, maintain, and post weekly staff schedules that maintain required North Carolina child-to-staff ratios while staying cost-effective.
  • Direct Classroom Coverage: Step into classrooms as the primary substitute/floater to cover staff absences, call-outs, and ratio adjustments when substitutes cannot be acquired.
  • PTO & Absence Coordination: Collaborate with administration to review, approve, and schedule employee PTO and appointment requests, ensuring all open slots are covered in advance.
  • Daily Breaks & Support: Coordinate and conduct short morning breaks for teaching staff as time and scheduling permit.
  • Substitute Roster: Maintain a list of reliable substitute staff and manage daily shift coverage.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all classroom operations strictly adhere to North Carolina Childcare rules, sanitation standards, and center policies.
  • Medication Administration: Administer oral medications and accurately maintain "Permission to Administer Medications" forms.
  • Allergy Management: Maintain and prominently post updated child food allergy lists in all classrooms and the kitchen.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct and log monthly playground safety inspections, fire drills, and fire extinguisher checks. Report non-compliance issues immediately to the Director.

Operational & Closing Duties

  • Supervision Support: Assist in supervising the cook and part-time afternoon staff; inform the Director when addressing or documenting discipline measures.
  • Kitchen Support: Assist the cook with menu planning and distribution, food inventory (Sysco, Sam’s, Walmart), and cover kitchen duties when the cook is absent.
  • Afternoon Closing Routines:
    • Wash snack dishes, manage laundry, and sanitize toys in the dishwasher (draining and opening the front door upon cycle completion).
  • Collect, sanitize, refill, and refrigerate classroom water coolers daily.
  • Prepare fresh sanitizing and disinfecting solutions (Monday–Thursday).
  • Perform facility closing checks: secure all glass back doors, close windows, and set the security alarm if the cleaning crew has not arrived.

Administrative & Center Engagement

  • Office & Communication: Support phone coverage, assist the Director/Assistant Director with administrative tasks, and collect monthly attendance sheets.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain professional boundaries and absolute confidentiality regarding children, families, and personnel matters (discussions remain behind closed office doors).
  • Policy Adherence: Know, uphold, and apply policies from The Sandbox Family Handbook, Staff Handbook, and KLINGSPOR Abrasives, Inc. policy manual.
  • Special Events: Participate in center-wide events, including graduations, holiday programs, and seasonal activities.

Key Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a licensed North Carolina childcare facility (familiarity with NC Childcare Rules and sanitation regulations required).
  • Strong organizational, time management, and scheduling skills.
  • Flexibility to seamlessly transition from administrative planning to direct hands-on classroom teaching.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).

Benefits Package

We offer a competitive compensation structure along with comprehensive benefits:

  • Health & Wellness: Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance options.
  • Income Protection: Short-Term and Long-Term Disability coverage.
  • Retirement: 401(k) plan with generous company match.
  • Time Off: Paid Time Off (PTO) plus 9 paid holidays annually.

To Apply: Submit your resume and state credential documentation directly to our hiring team or visit us at The Sandbox Child Development Center.

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate against applicants due to race, ethnicity, gender, age, veteran status, or on the basis of disability or any other federal, state or local protected class
