CNC Set-Up Machinist

GSC Power-Division – North Charleston, SC
Full-Time | On-Site
Monday–Friday | 6:30 AM–3:00 PM

Build the Best.

GSC Power-Division engineers and manufactures high-performance camshafts and valvetrain components used in championship-winning race cars and high-performance street vehicles around the world.

We’re looking for an experienced CNC Set-Up Machinist who can take ownership of machine setups, first-piece production, tooling, offsets, inspection and troubleshooting.

This position goes beyond operating CNC equipment. The Set-Up Machinist is responsible for preparing machines to produce precision components accurately, efficiently and repeatably. You’ll work hands-on with CNC lathes, mills, grinders and related manufacturing equipment, ensuring each setup is correct and production is ready to run.

The right person has a strong understanding of machining fundamentals and is comfortable taking ownership of setups, identifying problems, making adjustments and ensuring parts meet quality requirements.

What You’ll Do

  • Set up CNC lathes, mills, grinders and related manufacturing equipment.
  • Install and indicate fixtures, workholding and tooling.
  • Set tool geometry, tool length and work offsets.
  • Perform complete machine changeovers accurately and efficiently.
  • Load, review and edit CNC programs and G-code as needed.
  • Prove out new or revised programs before releasing machines to production.
  • Adjust feeds, speeds, tooling and offsets to maintain quality and machining performance.
  • Produce and inspect first-piece components, making corrections as needed to bring parts into tolerance.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools and inserts for machining operations.
  • Diagnose machining issues including tool wear, chatter, dimensional drift and surface-finish problems.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, tolerances and GD&T.
  • Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gauges and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Use CMM inspection results where applicable.
  • Create, update and follow setup sheets and work instructions.
  • Assist CNC operators with machine, tooling and quality issues.
  • Help improve setup time, cycle time and overall process reliability.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe machining environment.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of recent, hands-on CNC machining and machine setup experience.
  • Experience performing complete CNC setups and changeovers.
  • CNC lathe experience strongly preferred.
  • CNC mill and grinder experience is valuable.
  • Strong understanding of tooling, inserts, speeds and feeds.
  • Ability to read, understand and edit G-code.
  • Strong blueprint and GD&T interpretation skills.
  • Experience holding and verifying tight manufacturing tolerances.
  • Strong proficiency with micrometers, calipers, indicators and other precision measuring tools.
  • Ability to diagnose machining problems and determine corrective action.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of machine setup and first-piece quality.
  • Reliable, detail-oriented and able to work effectively with operators, manufacturing personnel and engineering.

Experience with OKUMA OSP controls is strongly preferred.

Experience with FANUC controls and G-code programming is highly valuable.

Technical education, machining school, CNC certification or equivalent hands-on machining experience is preferred.

You should understand how tooling, offsets, workholding, programming and machine conditions affect the finished part and be able to identify and correct problems before they become production issues.

Physical & Safety Requirements

  • Ability to lift 40+ lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely handle tooling, fixtures and raw materials.
  • Ability to perform repetitive manufacturing tasks safely and consistently.
  • Must follow all company and machine safety procedures.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check if requested.

Why GSC?

For more than 20 years, GSC Power-Division has built a reputation for producing high-quality performance camshafts and valvetrain components for the aftermarket automotive industry.

We continue to invest in manufacturing equipment, automation, machining processes and technology and we’re looking for skilled machinists who want to grow with that operation.

You’ll work in a modern, fully air-conditioned manufacturing facility with opportunities to expand your machining, setup and programming skills.

Benefits include:

  • Competitive pay based on machining experience and technical capability.
  • Health, dental and vision insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid time off.
  • Employee discounts on GSC Power-Division parts.
  • Relocation assistance where applicable.

If you’re a CNC machinist who takes pride in a good setup, understands what it takes to hold tolerance and enjoys solving machining problems, we’d like to hear from you.
