What they need
The Dunedin City Council (DCC) takes great pride in delivering a broad range of services to the communities of this unique and fascinating city. From our roads to recycling, public libraries and pools, water supply to walking tracks, and everything in between, DCC's people are talented and committed to serving their city.
Our team manages infrastructure across a diverse district that includes approximately 150 km of coastline, exposed to coastal erosion, inundation and other coastal hazards. We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Coastal Engineer to join the team and help manage existing coastal infrastructure while developing and delivering engineering responses that improve the resilience of Dunedin's coastal communities.
The opportunity:
This is a varied technical and project delivery role covering coastal infrastructure, engineering design and assessment, coastal hazard management, monitoring and long-term adaptation planning.
You will manage coastal infrastructure maintenance and renewal programmes, procure and oversee investigations and design services, manage contractors and construction works, and provide specialist coastal engineering advice to support Council decision-making.
A key part of the role will be contributing to major coastal programmes, including the St Clair-St Kilda Coastal Plan and Kettle Park landfill remediation programme, as well as assessing and developing responses to coastal hazard hotspots across the wider Dunedin district.
You will work across both hard and soft engineering solutions, including seawalls, geobags, beach nourishment and other coastal interventions, helping Council determine how infrastructure should be maintained, renewed and adapted in response to changing coastal risks.
Ideally you will have:
- A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline. Applicants with a coastal science or physical oceanography background and demonstrated coastal engineering experience may also be considered.
- Preferably 3-5+ years' experience in coastal engineering.
- A postgraduate qualification in Coastal Engineering, Coastal Processes, Ocean Engineering, Maritime Engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous.
- Sound knowledge of coastal processes, geomorphology and hydrodynamics, including waves, currents, sediment transport and wave loading.
- Knowledge of coastal engineering design, including hard and soft engineering solutions and relevant civil engineering requirements and standards.
- Experience in coastal infrastructure asset management.
- Experience delivering projects and managing consultants, contractors and contracts.
- Competence in physical coastal surveys and geospatial tools such as GIS.
- An understanding of the advantages and limitations of coastal hydrodynamic and morphodynamic modelling.
- The ability to think strategically, work independently and provide clear, evidence-based technical advice.
- A current, valid Class 1 driver's licence.
In addition to your technical skills, you will be a strong communicator who can explain complex coastal engineering issues to a wide range of audiences. You will enjoy working collaboratively across technical disciplines and be comfortable engaging with consultants, contractors, Council staff and the wider community.
What we offer
- Make a tangible difference - help shape how Dunedin manages coastal hazards and protects its coastal communities.
- Work on significant coastal projects - including the St Clair-St Kilda Coastal Plan, Kettle Park remediation and coastal infrastructure projects across the district.
- A varied role - combining engineering, project delivery, asset management, monitoring and strategic coastal adaptation.
- Work across an exceptional coastline - applying coastal engineering to real-world challenges along approximately 150 km of diverse coastline.
- Collaborative work environment - work alongside coastal scientists, engineers, asset managers, planners and other specialists across Council.
- Long-term impact - help develop the systems, infrastructure and adaptation responses that will shape Dunedin's coastal resilience for decades to come.
The DCC is committed to the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and our work serving the citizens of Dunedin will reflect this.
