Job Summary

Languages Unlimited, LLC is seeking an experienced Command Historian to support the U.S. Army at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

The selected candidate will provide historical research, archival management, report writing, briefing, visitor-support, and stakeholder-coordination services. The position requires an experienced historian who can work effectively with military leaders, government personnel, museums, archives, academic institutions, veterans’ organizations, and other regional stakeholders.

This is a part-time position averaging approximately 20 hours per week or 1,040 hours annually. Daily hours may vary based on mission requirements. The primary work location will be Building 1, Perez Hall, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct historical research relating to Army operations, organizational history, and military activities.
  • Organize, inventory, catalogue, and maintain historical records, documents, photographs, artifacts, and archival materials.
  • Establish and maintain an accurate digital catalogue of historical holdings.
  • Develop procedures for receiving, documenting, preserving, and managing new historical materials.
  • Support the development and maintenance of historical displays and exhibits.
  • Prepare annual unit history reports, historical summaries, standard operating procedures, briefings, and other written products.
  • Present short historical vignettes during monthly command briefings.
  • Support senior-leader, distinguished-visitor, congressional, and staff-delegation visits.
  • Prepare presentation slides, briefing materials, concepts of operation, and post-visit after-action reports.
  • Assist with the review and coordination of memoranda of agreement and related annexes.
  • Coordinate with military commands, government agencies, museums, universities, tribal organizations, veterans’ groups, municipalities, and other stakeholders.
  • Support mission-related activities at Fort Wainwright, the Northern Warfare Training Area, and Donnelly Training Area when required.
  • Maintain the authenticity, accuracy, accountability, and proper handling of historical records and artifacts.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional experience in military history, institutional history, archival research, museum work, historical records management, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and write clear, accurate historical reports and executive-level briefing materials.
  • Experience organizing, cataloguing, preserving, or digitizing historical documents, photographs, records, or artifacts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate with military, government, academic, museum, community, or other institutional stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple research, coordination, and reporting assignments.
  • Ability to work primarily on-site at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
  • Ability to support a flexible daytime schedule based on mission requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Alaska for mission-related assignments.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance within the required period.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain installation, facility, and network access.
  • U.S. citizenship due to federal security-clearance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct knowledge of or experience involving the 11th Airborne Division, U.S. Army Alaska, or comparable Army organizations.
  • Knowledge of Alaska military history, Arctic operations, cold-weather operations, or military activities in extreme-weather environments.
  • Experience supporting an Army command historian, military museum, historical office, archives, or institutional-history program.
  • Familiarity with Army historical, museum, archival, and records-management standards.
  • Experience preparing unit histories, historical monographs, military-history publications, exhibits, oral histories, or command briefings.
  • Experience supporting senior military leaders, congressional delegations, distinguished visitors, or military exercises.
  • Familiarity with Army digital repositories, SharePoint, Microsoft Office, archival databases, or comparable records-management platforms.
  • Current or previously held Secret security clearance.
  • Existing access to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is beneficial but not required.

Work Schedule and Travel

The position is expected to average approximately 20 hours per week. No fixed daily schedule is guaranteed. Work hours will be coordinated according to current workload, command events, briefings, and mission requirements.

The selected candidate must be available for events occurring during normal business hours. Certain exercises, rotations, distinguished-visitor engagements, or special projects may temporarily require more than the normal part-time level of effort.

Occasional travel may be required, including assignments at Fort Wainwright and Donnelly Training Area. A major exercise or rotation may require approximately two to three weeks of support at Fort Wainwright, subject to mission requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be discussed with qualified candidates and will comply with the applicable federal wage determination and contract requirements.

Final compensation will depend on the candidate’s directly relevant experience, qualifications, clearance status, employment classification, and agreed scope of responsibilities.
