What they need

Seasonal Commis Chef – Christmas Period | Queen of Hockley

We are seeking a motivated, reliable and enthusiastic Seasonal Commis Chef to join our kitchen team at Queen of Hockley during our busy Christmas period. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for food, a positive attitude and a strong work ethic to gain valuable experience within a fast-paced, independent hospitality business.

At Queen of Hockley, we pride ourselves on consistency, fresh and tasty food, excellent presentation and attention to detail. We are looking for someone who shares these values and is committed to maintaining our high standards, even during the busiest services of the festive season.

The role will involve supporting the kitchen team with the preparation and service of our festive menu, Christmas buffets and our usual food menu, served daily between 12pm and 9pm. With large table bookings, high-volume services and multiple menus running alongside one another, the successful candidate must be prepared to work efficiently under pressure, communicate effectively and contribute positively to the wider team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and cooking of dishes across our usual menu, festive menu and Christmas buffet service, following instructions from senior kitchen staff.
  • Ensure all food is prepared, cooked and presented consistently, with a strong focus on quality, portion control and attention to detail.
  • Support the kitchen team in managing large table bookings and busy service periods, ensuring food is prepared and delivered efficiently and on time.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and hygienic workstation throughout preparation and service, following all food safety procedures and hygiene regulations.
  • Ensure ingredients are stored correctly, stock is rotated appropriately and food waste is kept to a minimum.
  • Follow recipes, preparation methods and plating instructions to maintain the standards expected at Queen of Hockley.
  • Assist with deliveries, food preparation, stock replenishment and general kitchen duties as required.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head Chef, senior chefs and wider kitchen team to ensure smooth service and effective communication.
  • Remain calm, focused and professional during busy periods, demonstrating a willingness to help wherever needed.
  • Adhere to all food hygiene, health and safety procedures and maintain a professional standard of conduct at all times.

Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in a professional kitchen or food preparation role is desirable, although a positive attitude and willingness to learn are equally important.
  • A genuine passion for food and a commitment to producing fresh, tasty dishes to a consistent standard.
  • The ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment, particularly during busy festive services.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to follow instructions and manage tasks effectively.
  • A keen eye for detail, particularly when it comes to food preparation, portioning and presentation.
  • An understanding of food hygiene, safe food handling and kitchen cleanliness.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit team.
  • A flexible, dependable and hardworking approach, with a willingness to support colleagues and take direction from senior kitchen staff.
  • The ability to maintain a positive attitude and high standards when working under pressure.

What We Expect

Christmas is one of the busiest periods of the year at Queen of Hockley, and this role requires someone who understands the importance of teamwork, efficiency and consistency during high-volume service. The successful candidate must be prepared to adapt to changing demands, support colleagues when needed and take pride in every dish leaving the kitchen.

As an independent business, our reputation is built on serving fresh, tasty food that is consistently prepared and presented to a high standard. Every member of our kitchen team plays an important part in delivering this experience, and we expect the same level of care, commitment and attention to detail throughout the festive season.

This is an opportunity to become part of our team during an exciting and demanding time of year, contribute to memorable Christmas dining experiences and help us deliver the quality and service our customers expect from Queen of Hockley.
