Commodity Analyst

About the Role

We are seeking a highly analytical and driven Commodities Analyst to join our team. In this role, you will conduct deep fundamental, macroeconomic, and geopolitical research across Chinese and global commodity markets, with a focus on oil, LNG, the petrochemical chain, base metals, and coal. You will act as a strategic partner to our trading desk, translating complex market data and value chain dynamics into actionable, high-conviction trading strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Market Analysis: Conduct detailed fundamental, macroeconomic, and geopolitical analysis across Chinese and global commodity markets (oil, LNG, the petrochemical chain, base metals, and coal).
• Value Chain Expertise: Develop a deep understanding of commodity value chains, including supply/demand dynamics, production economics, trade flows, inventories, and upstream/downstream relationships.
• Policy & Regulation Tracking: Monitor and evaluate global and Chinese regulatory changes, government policies, and structural shifts impacting commodity trading.
• Strategy Generation: Identify upcoming catalysts and structural developments to generate tactical trading ideas based on expected volatility and market direction.
• Trading Desk Collaboration: Partner closely with the trading team to evaluate, backtest, and execute market strategies.
• Data Modeling & Analytics: Build, optimize, and maintain quantitative data models, dashboards, and research tools using Python, SQL, and other analytics platforms.
• Market Monitoring: Continuously track supply/demand trends, physical inventory levels, shipping/logistics data, and other market-moving variables.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Experience: 3+ years of experience in a commodities-focused analytical role within a buy-side, sell-side, consulting, trading house, or related environment.
• Domain Knowledge: Strong understanding of Chinese and global commodity markets, physical value chains, and macro drivers.
• Technical Skillset: Proficiency in Python and SQL for advanced data handling, financial modeling, and visualization.
• Industry Tools: Familiarity with Bloomberg, Reuters, or equivalent market intelligence platforms.
• Language Proficiency: Fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English (written and spoken) to effectively analyze local policies and communicate globally.
• Core Competencies: High attention to detail, exceptional communication skills, and the agility to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative trading environment.
