Communication/Education Support Worker

About the role

As a Communication/Education Support Worker at Taieri College, you will support the school programme by contributing to the provision of quality access to education through high-level support for teaching and learning. You will have specialist knowledge, initiative, and application of judgement, guided by the classroom teacher and specialist staff members from Ko Taku Reo who will maintain responsibility for the development of the teaching/learning programme and assessing educational outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate communication effectively in a classroom setting and wider school setting using New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL)
• Work as a team member to raise student achievement
• Contribute as a member of a professional team and assist in the planning, preparation and implementation of education programmes and resources to enhance student support
• Liaise with teachers and other members of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student's support team
• Communicate sensitively and effectively with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and adults
• Maintain confidentiality and respect of student's dignity and rights to communication access
• Be flexible and responsive in a changing classroom environment

About you

• Proficient in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) as a communicator
• Demonstrates effective interpersonal, organisational and problem-solving skills
• Understands the issues affecting Deaf/Hard of Hearing people and the diversity of needs in Aotearoa
• Displays professional attributes, maintaining confidentiality and respect of student's dignity and rights to communication access
