What they need
Job Overview
New Journey Community Outreach (NJCO) is seeking a creative, highly organized communicator to help us tell the story of our work, strengthen relationships with donors, and build the visibility and resources needed to serve our community.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys moving between a compelling social media post, a donor letter, an impact story, and the behind-the-scenes details that keep communications and development efforts running smoothly.
The Communications & Development Coordinator will lead NJCO's day-to-day communications and provide support for donor engagement and fundraising activities. Priorities will shift throughout the year based on campaigns, events, grant cycles, and organizational needs.
As a small, community-based organization, NJCO offers the opportunity to work closely with organizational leadership, have meaningful ownership of your work, and see its direct impact in the community.
Communications & Storytelling
The Coordinator will help ensure that NJCO communicates consistently, professionally, and authentically across platforms. Responsibilities include:
- Plan, create, and manage social media content across NJCO's channels.
- Develop email communications, including NJCO's quarterly newsletter, donor updates, appeals, and campaign messages.
- Create and coordinate print and digital materials such as flyers, signage, event materials, and annual and impact report content.
- Maintain website content and coordinate updates with NJCO's digital partner.
- Support promotion of NJCO events through social media, email, signage, community outreach, and press communications.
- Gather stories, photographs, program updates, and impact information that demonstrate NJCO's work in the community.
- Help maintain a consistent organizational voice and visual identity across communications.
- Tell compelling, respectful stories that center dignity and avoid sensationalizing the experiences of the people NJCO serves.
Development & Donor Engagement
Working closely with the Executive Director, the Coordinator will help strengthen NJCO's donor communications and provide research and administrative support for fundraising efforts. Responsibilities include:
- Maintain NJCO's donor database, including accurate gift records, contact information, donor segmentation, and reporting.
- Coordinate gift acknowledgments and prepare timely, personalized donor thank-you communications.
- Develop donor stewardship communications, including impact updates, year-end appeals, campaign materials, and other donor-facing content.
- Assist with donor research and help identify prospective individual, corporate, and foundation supporters.
- Research potential grant opportunities that align with NJCO's programs and priorities.
- Support the Executive Director, who serves as NJCO's primary grant writer, by researching relevant data and background information, gathering program information and required attachments, tracking deadlines, and assisting with other components of grant preparation and reporting.
- Assist with fundraising and community events, including communications, sponsor recognition, donor follow-up, and event materials.
- Represent NJCO at occasional community events and help build awareness of the organization's work and mission.
What We're Looking For
The strongest candidate will be an excellent writer and communicator who is comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and adapting their writing for different audiences and purposes.
Required qualifications:
- Approximately 3+ years of professional experience in communications, marketing, development, nonprofit work, or a related field.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to shift comfortably between conversational and professional communications.
- Experience creating content for social media and email communications.
- Basic design skills using Canva or a similar platform.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Comfort working with databases, CRM systems, or similar platforms and maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to work independently in a primarily remote environment while communicating regularly with a small team.
- Good judgment and sensitivity when communicating about homelessness, food insecurity, recovery, and other experiences affecting the people NJCO serves.
Helpful, but not required:
- Experience working for a nonprofit, human-services organization, or community-based organization.
- Familiarity with donor databases or CRM platforms such as DonorSnap.
- Experience researching prospective grants, foundations, donors, or funding opportunities.
- Experience with email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar.
- Photography or basic videography skills for storytelling and social media.
- Spanish-language skills.
Grant-writing experience is not required. The Executive Director remains responsible for NJCO's grant strategy and primary grant writing. This position supports that work through research, information gathering, deadline tracking, and related preparation.
Schedule & Work Environment
This is a 22-hour-per-week position with significant scheduling flexibility. Most responsibilities can be completed remotely.
The Coordinator will have a weekly 30–60-minute check-in with the Executive Director and will periodically work on-site for team meetings, events, photography and content gathering, or other activities that benefit from being present at NJCO.
Occasional evening or weekend availability is required for approximately 4–6 events per year.
How to Apply
Please send the following to [email protected]:
- A resume.
- A brief cover letter describing your interest in the position and how your experience would translate to a role combining communications and development support.
- 2–4 relevant work samples that demonstrate your communications skills. Examples might include social media content, newsletters or email campaigns, donor communications, flyers or other designed materials, website content, or similar work. A formal portfolio is welcome but not required.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
We know strong candidates do not always meet every qualification listed. If this role interests you and you believe your skills and experience could translate well to NJCO's work, we encourage you to apply.
