What they need

About us

We are an Indigenous-led eco-village near Rockford, Alabama.
We primarily eat meat and vegetables (no breads, pastas, sugary foods or drinks)

We are a small, close-knit community, with villagers, workers, volunteers, builders, and guests periodically staying at the village for several weeks at a time.

We are looking for a reliable, capable, and community-minded Cook to take responsibility for preparing daily lunch and dinner for the village.

This is an opportunity for someone who is interested in living close to nature, participating in a small community, and experiencing life within an Indigenous-led environment.

The Role

The primary responsibility of the Community Cook is to make sure the village has healthy, satisfying meals prepared on time each day.

You will have considerable independence in organizing the kitchen, planning meals, and managing food supplies.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepare lunch and dinner every day
  • Ensure lunch is ready by 1:00 PM
  • Ensure dinner is ready by 7:00 PM (sometimes earlier during the Fall-Winter seasons)
  • Plan meals appropriate for a small, changing group of people
  • Keep the kitchen clean, organized, and sanitary
  • Clean dishes, counters, cooking surfaces, floors, and kitchen equipment as part of the daily routine
  • Organize and maintain the pantry and food-storage areas
  • Monitor food supplies and identify items that are running low
  • Provide regular grocery requests so that supplies can be replenished before they run out
  • Communicate with the village coordinator regarding upcoming needs, dietary considerations, guests, and changes in population.
  • Adjust meals and quantities when additional workers or guests are staying at the village.
  • Minimize food waste and make practical use of available ingredients.

Schedule

The position offers flexible working hours, provided that meals are consistently prepared and ready on time.
You may organize your preparation, cooking, cleaning, and personal time around those requirements. We are looking for someone who can organize their work

This is not a conventional restaurant or hospitality job.

You would be living and working within a small Indigenous-led village with its own culture, traditions, expectations, and community rules. Among those rules is that we do not permit alcohol, drugs, commercial tobacco or smoking of any kind.

The ability to approach this environment with respect, humility, discretion, and an open mind is essential.

This position is particularly well suited to someone who is looking for a change of pace, wants to spend time in nature, and is interested in contributing to a community rather than simply clocking in and out of a job.

We are especially interested in hearing from people who are genuinely excited by the opportunity to live close to nature, contribute to a small community, and become part of a natural environment.

Please apply only if you are comfortable with the community environment, village policies, and responsibilities described above.

We value a range of skills, experiences, and perspectives and encourage qualified candidates from historically underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

We embrace diverse skills, perspectives and ideas, and encourages people of color, LGBTQ+ candidates, and people from other underrepresented groups to apply.

Pay: $12.00 - $25.00 per hour
