What they need

Position overview

The Community Engagement Coordinator will identify and develop new ways to activate 210 Gallery and welcome new audiences and demographic groups. Through community partnerships, creative activities and personal outreach, the coordinator will help make the gallery a welcoming place for people of different ages, backgrounds and interests.

Working with gallery staff and community partners, the coordinator will explore fresh uses of the space, help test small, accessible activities and arrange group visits. These efforts will respond to community interests, encourage repeat participation and deepen engagement with rural and Northern Manitoba artists.

Key responsibilities

Community relationships and outreach

  • Build relationships with Winnipeg community organizations and groups to reach new audiences and learn what would encourage their participation in gallery activities.
  • Meet with potential partners to learn about their interests, preferred ways of participating and barriers to attending.
  • Develop a manageable outreach plan with gallery staff, maintain a contact record and follow up with partners to build ongoing relationships.

Invitations and welcoming participation

  • Share clear, personal invitations and coordinate group visits or participation in selected gallery activities.
  • Work with staff and partners on practical details such as timing, group size, accessibility needs and what participants can expect.
  • Welcome groups at selected events, introduce the space and activities, and follow up to gather feedback and invite future participation.

Gallery activation and audience development

  • Identify creative ways to activate the gallery space through informal gatherings, hands-on activities and collaborations with community groups.
  • Invite input from new audiences and demographic groups, and work with partners and gallery staff to develop activities that reflect their interests and encourage participation.
  • Help pilot a small number of new activities or uses of the space, coordinating details and supplies with staff within the available time and project budget.

Communication and project learning

  • Provide the marketing team with partner insights and information that will help invitations and event descriptions reach the intended audiences.
  • Keep brief records of outreach, partner activities, group participation and feedback, respecting participants’ privacy and consent.
  • Share progress with the supervisor and prepare a short final summary of what worked, lessons learned and opportunities for continued relationships.

Qualifications and strengths

  • Experience building relationships through community work, arts programming, outreach, volunteering or other relevant activities.
  • A welcoming approach, strong listening skills and confidence communicating with people from different backgrounds.
  • An interest in the arts, creative thinking and initiative in finding new ways to use a gallery space and engage a wider range of people.
  • Ability to organize meetings and visits, follow through on commitments and manage a modest project workload independently.
  • Awareness of barriers to arts participation and a willingness to adapt plans in response to community feedback.
  • Comfort using email, shared documents and simple contact or activity records. Existing Winnipeg community connections and additional languages are assets.

Relevant lived experience, community involvement and informal learning are valued alongside paid work and education. A formal arts qualification is not required.

Working arrangements

This is a paid, time-limited role combining outreach, planning and attendance at selected gallery activities. Some evening or weekend work will be required, with the schedule agreed in advance within the funded hours. The coordinator will work closely with gallery and marketing staff, who provide programming and communications support.

Expected results

By the end of the term, the coordinator will have built community relationships, supported participation by new audiences and demographic groups, and helped test new ways to activate the gallery. A brief summary will capture what encouraged participation and how the gallery can sustain those connections. Specific activity targets will be agreed with the supervisor at the start of the contract.
