About St. Matthew's Lutheran Church

St. Matthew's is a passionate, imperfect community of Christ nestled in the Renton Highlands. We boldly affirm people of all cultures, ages, abilities, stories, experiences, skin tones, sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions, and we trust in the radical, impartial love of God. When our differences are used to divide or hurt us, we are committed to reconciliation and healing so that justice, equity, grace, and inclusion remain our way of life. See St. Matthew's website for more information.

Position Summary

The Community Engagement Program Manager oversees church communications, event planning, volunteer engagement, and daily office and facility operations. Serving as the primary point of contact for staff, congregants, partners, and visitors, this role ensures clear communication, efficient shared-space management, and smooth day-to-day administration. Working with a high degree of independence, the Program Manager builds inclusive, reliable operational systems that align with the church's mission and connect community members with meaningful opportunities to engage.

Communications & Event Planning

  • Front Office Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact for visitors, calls, and inquiries, directing individuals to appropriate staff, ministries, or resources.
  • Publications & Digital Media: Draft, produce, and distribute weekly publications (bulletins, newsletters, prayer updates), print materials, and the Annual Report. Manage social media channels (Facebook, Instagram) and website content in collaboration with volunteers.
  • Event Planning and Support: Partner with staff and leaders to plan, promote, and execute congregational and community events.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruitment, Screening & Onboarding: Collaborate with ministry leaders to define volunteer roles, conduct background checks, screen, onboard, train, and schedule volunteers.
  • Engagement & Retention: Foster strong volunteer relationships through clear communication, appreciation, and aligning volunteer skills and interests with ministry needs.

Operations & Office Management

  • Facilities, Access & Partner Coordination: Manage facility scheduling, physical keys, security systems, and door codes while coordinating with onsite nonprofit renters and community partners (e.g., Kindering, Sustainable Renton, AA groups) to ensure smooth shared-space operations and transitions.
  • Office Administration & Systems Management: Oversee day-to-day office supply and vendor coordination, maintain accurate, secure databases, records, and password systems, and continuously refine operational protocols to improve efficiency and support the church's mission.

Financial & Program Support

  • Financial Administration: Support the Treasurer, Bookkeeper, and Finance Team by gathering documentation, processing invoices/reimbursements, and preparing financial reports as requested.
  • Grant & Ministry Fund Tracking: Monitor, track, and report on grant funds and financial reimbursements specifically allocated for justice-focused community programs (e.g., Community Meal, Afterschool Program).

Weekly Rhythm

  • Maintain consistent office hours per the posted schedule ( Monday - Thursday and Sundays), with flexibility for operational needs.
  • Participate in weekly staff alignment meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of administrative, office or operations management experience (nonprofit or faith-based environment preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business administration, nonprofit management, communications or related field desirable; budget management/fiscal agent experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar) and social media platforms with an ability to quickly learn new software tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment for all community members, including unhoused neighbors and marginalized populations.
  • Strong initiative, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills, with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to pass a standard criminal background check and complete required organizational onboarding/training.

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of and commitment to St. Matthew's core values and mission.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented approach with respect for professional and personal boundaries.
  • Open, timely communication and protection of confidential information.
