What they need
We are looking for a compassionate, proactive and motivated Housing Support Worker to provide person-centred support to individuals experiencing housing insecurity and complex life challenges.
A key focus of this role is supporting people living in temporary accommodation to identify and secure positive, sustainable move-on options. You will work alongside customers to overcome barriers to accessing longer-term housing, develop relationships with private rented sector landlords, and identify suitable accommodation opportunities that promote independence, choice and stability.
Working in line with the values and behaviours of the organisation and The Plymouth Alliance (TPA), you will empower individuals to build on their strengths, achieve their goals and make positive, lasting changes to their lives.
Housing Support and Move-On
- Provide targeted, practical support to customers living in temporary accommodation, helping them identify and secure suitable, sustainable longer-term housing options.
- Work proactively with customers to identify and overcome barriers to accessing accommodation, including supporting them to navigate the private rented sector.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with private rented sector landlords, housing providers and partner agencies to identify suitable housing opportunities and facilitate successful move-on.
- Support customers to prepare for independent living, understand their tenancy responsibilities and develop the skills needed to sustain their accommodation.
- Coordinate move-on arrangements with relevant landlords, housing providers and support services to ensure positive and sustainable transitions into longer-term housing.
Person-Centred Support and Empowerment
- Build positive, trusting relationships with customers through regular contact, including visits to their homes and appropriate community settings.
- Identify individuals' aspirations, strengths and support needs through assessments and work collaboratively with them to develop strengths-based, person-centred support plans.
- Regularly review, update and record support plans, monitoring progress and celebrating achievements.
- Provide flexible, empowering support that promotes choice, control, independence and the ability to manage everyday life.
- Encourage customers to develop confidence, resilience and practical life skills to support their long-term wellbeing and housing stability.
- Promote peer involvement and encourage customers to make positive contributions to their communities, while supporting their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
Advice, Advocacy and Partnership Working
- Provide advice, guidance and structured practical support across a range of areas, including housing, health, safety, substance misuse, mental health, offending, wellbeing and welfare benefits.
- With the individual's consent, liaise with relevant agencies and professionals to facilitate access to services, benefits and community resources.
- Accompany and support customers, where appropriate, to appointments with other services, including healthcare professionals, counsellors and courts.
- Work collaboratively with partner agencies to ensure customers receive coordinated, appropriate and effective support.
- Advocate for customers' needs and rights, helping them access opportunities and overcome barriers to achieving their goals.
Professional Practice and Service Development
- Act as a positive role model, representing the organisation and The Plymouth Alliance professionally and in accordance with their values and behaviours.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of support provided, customer progress and agreed outcomes.
- Contribute to regular service reports, monitoring, evaluation and continuous improvement activities.
- Work in a flexible, respectful and professional manner, maintaining appropriate boundaries and promoting the safety, dignity and wellbeing of all customers.
