What they need
Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Construction Controller to lead our financial oversight within the construction sector. This pivotal role involves managing all financial activities related to construction projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and driving accurate financial reporting. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in accounting principles, including GAAP, IFRS, and governmental accounting standards, with a passion for maintaining financial integrity and operational excellence. As a key member of our finance team, you will oversee budgeting, cost analysis, and financial close processes to support strategic decision-making and project success.
Duties
· Lead the transition to the accrual method of accounting and determine, document, and implement the correct method for long-term construction contracts under IRC §460, including whether the company's contracts qualify for an available exception.
· Prepare the supporting analysis, Form 3115 filings, and IRC §481(a) adjustment computations in coordination with the company's outside CPA firm.
· Build and maintain the monthly work-in-progress schedule, including cost-to-complete, over- and under-billings, and job-level margin reporting, working with Project Managers to validate estimated costs to complete.
· Own the monthly close and deliver reconciled financial statements and supporting schedules to the CFO/COO on an agreed schedule.
· Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, and reconcile all balance sheet accounts monthly, including bank, credit card, loan, and retainage accounts.
· Maintain job cost accounting and reconcile job cost detail to the general ledger and to project budgets maintained in BuilderTrend.
· Review AIA progress billings against the approved schedule of values and executed change orders, and manage accounts receivable, retainage, and collections.
· Oversee accounts payable, including subcontractor invoice review, retainage withholding, and maintenance of subcontractor compliance records such as W-9 forms, insurance certificates, and lien releases.
· Manage insurance accounting and premium payments, and support annual workers' compensation and general liability premium audits.
· Manage the daily cash position, cash flow forecasting by project and in aggregate, and construction loan draw submissions.
· Review payroll and reconcile it to the general ledger and to quarterly payroll tax returns.
· Prepare applicable state and local tax filings and maintain contractor licensing and registration renewals.
· Support the annual financial statement review or audit and all lender, surety, and bonding reporting requirements.
· Maintain internal controls over cash disbursements, including segregation of duties between transaction entry and review, and improve accounting workflows and systems as the company grows.
· Direct and review the work of bookkeeping and administrative staff responsible for invoice entry, payroll input, and other transaction processing; train and develop that team and assume formal supervision as the department develops.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA license or candidacy is an asset.
· Seven or more years of accounting experience, including at least four in construction accounting with a general contractor, homebuilder, or specialty trade contractor.
· Hands-on experience with percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and the preparation and monthly maintenance of work-in-progress schedules.
· Working knowledge of the accounting method rules applicable to construction contractors under IRC §§448 and 460, and of ASC 606 as applied to construction contracts. Experience leading a cash-to-accrual conversion or a Form 3115 method change is strongly preferred.
· Experience with AIA billing, schedules of values, retainage, change order accounting, and subcontractor compliance.
· Advanced QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel skills; experience with BuilderTrend or comparable construction management software.
· Familiarity with Florida construction lien law and the Florida sales and use tax treatment of construction contracts.
· Ability to research a technical accounting or tax question, reach a supportable conclusion, and document it in writing.
· Ability to work independently with limited supervision and to manage competing deadlines.
· Ability to communicate financial results clearly to non-financial project staff, in writing and in person.
· Absolute discretion in handling confidential information; consistently present at work and punctual.
