About Wyatt W. Underwood & Associates

Wyatt W. Underwood & Associates, LLC (WWUA) is a multidisciplinary organization specializing in recreation, construction, infrastructure improvements, and project advisory services.

With decades of industry experience, our organization supports public agencies, educational institutions, municipalities, and commercial clients in the planning, estimating, development, and execution of construction projects.

Our work encompasses playgrounds, recreational facilities, shade structures, athletic facilities, safety surfacing, concrete improvements, demolition, civil sitework, and related infrastructure.

We are seeking an experienced Construction Estimator / Preconstruction Coordinator to strengthen our estimating capabilities, coordinate construction bids, and provide technical support to our business development and project management teams.

Position Overview

This position is designed for an experienced construction professional who brings practical knowledge, sound judgment, and a comprehensive understanding of construction estimating.

The successful candidate will work directly with our business development personnel, project management team, and executive leadership to evaluate opportunities, prepare competitive estimates, and identify potential construction challenges.

We are particularly interested in someone who can contribute expertise in construction disciplines beyond our traditional recreational and specialty construction activities.

The role combines hands-on estimating, preconstruction coordination, and technical advisory responsibilities.

Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Estimating & Bid Development

  • Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and contract requirements.
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
  • Evaluate construction methods, production rates, material requirements, and project costs.
  • Develop estimates for California public works and commercial construction projects.
  • Review subcontractor quotations and identify scope gaps, exclusions, and pricing inconsistencies.
  • Evaluate project risks, site conditions, and potential constructability concerns.
  • Incorporate prevailing wage requirements and applicable labor classifications into public works estimates.
  • Prepare organized bid summaries and recommendations for executive management.

Preconstruction & Business Development Coordination

  • Collaborate with our business development team to evaluate prospective construction opportunities.
  • Coordinate bid preparation, subcontractor solicitations, vendor quotations, and proposal documentation.
  • Assist management with project Go/No-Go evaluations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project profitability and estimating accuracy.
  • Recommend alternative construction methods or subcontracting strategies when appropriate.
  • Maintain historical estimating information and cost databases.

Project Management Advisory Support

  • Work with our Project Manager to review construction approaches and project execution requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance concerning sitework, grading, drainage, concrete, asphalt, demolition, and related construction activities.
  • Assist with construction sequencing, subcontractor scope development, and project cost considerations.
  • Support change order pricing, additional work estimates, and the evaluation of unforeseen site conditions.
  • Help identify potential project challenges and recommend practical solutions.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum five years of construction estimating or related construction management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing estimates for commercial or public works construction.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and quantity takeoffs.
  • Practical knowledge of construction labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor pricing.
  • Familiarity with California construction practices and public works requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and digital construction documentation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with a geographically distributed team.

Preferred

  • Experience with California municipal, educational, or other public agency projects.
  • Background in general contracting, civil sitework, grading, concrete, drainage, asphalt, or specialty construction.
  • Previous experience as a Project Manager, Project Engineer, Superintendent, or Senior Estimator.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam and construction estimating software.
  • Knowledge of California prevailing wage compliance and construction change order procedures.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who can do more than assemble quantities and pricing.

The ideal candidate understands how construction projects are built, recognizes potential risks before a bid is submitted, and can provide meaningful technical guidance to our team.

An experienced estimator seeking a flexible part-time opportunity, including a semi-retired construction professional with substantial industry knowledge, may be an excellent fit.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly compensation based on experience.
  • Flexible part-time scheduling.
  • Remote working opportunities for California-based candidates.
  • Direct interaction with executive management.
  • A diverse portfolio of construction and infrastructure projects.
  • An opportunity to contribute technical expertise to estimating, preconstruction, and project management.
  • Potential for expanded responsibilities as the organization grows.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume outlining your construction estimating experience, areas of technical expertise, and familiarity with California public works or commercial construction.

Candidates are encouraged to identify the types and approximate contract values of projects they have estimated.
