What they need

Tatum Asphalt is a full-service asphalt paving and maintenance contractor serving California’s Central Coast. We are growing intentionally and are looking for an experienced construction professional who wants to take ownership of projects, build strong client relationships, and grow with the company.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Construction Estimator / Project Coordinator to manage projects from initial customer inquiry and site evaluation through estimating, proposal follow-up, job coordination, and handoff to operations.

This is a professional construction position — not a field labor or general administrative role.

The right candidate has experience in construction estimating, project coordination, project management, construction sales, or a closely related role. You should be comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, communicating with customers and field teams, solving problems, and following work through to completion without requiring constant supervision.

Estimating & Project Evaluation

  • Conduct site visits to evaluate conditions, gather measurements, take photos, and determine project scope
  • Review plans, specifications, bid documents, and RFPs for residential, commercial, and public projects
  • Prepare accurate quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors
  • Develop clear, competitive proposals using estimating software, Excel, Bluebeam, and related tools
  • Identify project risks, site challenges, and scope gaps before work is priced
  • Obtain and evaluate vendor, supplier, and subcontractor pricing

Proposal & Bid Management

  • Prepare and submit detailed proposals and bid packages accurately and on time
  • Develop clear scopes of work based on project requirements and site conditions
  • Maintain organized records of estimates, bid documents, correspondence, and project notes
  • Track outstanding proposals and follow up consistently with prospective clients
  • Help move qualified opportunities from estimate to awarded project

Client & Project Coordination

  • Meet with homeowners, property managers, general contractors, and other clients to clarify scope and project requirements
  • Communicate clearly regarding pricing, scheduling, expectations, and next steps
  • Coordinate pre-construction requirements including submittals, permits, RFIs, inspections, pre-construction meetings, and closeout documentation as applicable
  • Work closely with the operations team to ensure complete and accurate project handoff
  • Conduct occasional site check-ins during and after construction to support quality and client satisfaction
  • Maintain communication between customers, office staff, and field operations when project conditions change

Performance & Process Improvement

  • Compare estimated costs and production assumptions to actual job performance
  • Use job-cost and profitability information to improve future estimating accuracy
  • Help refine estimating, sales, project-tracking, and handoff processes
  • Stay informed about material costs, market conditions, industry practices, and local competition
  • Work with management to develop useful reporting and track key performance indicators
  • Bring initiative, accountability, and practical problem-solving to a growing company

What You Bring

  • 2+ years of relevant construction experience in estimating, project coordination, project management, construction sales, or a closely related position
  • Demonstrated experience preparing estimates, takeoffs, proposals, or managing construction projects
  • Strong math, measurement, and analytical skills
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple bids, deadlines, customers, and competing priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, identify what needs to be done, and follow through
  • Sound critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Professional and confident communication with customers, general contractors, vendors, and field crews
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Compensation & Benefits

  • $75,000–$100,000 annual base salary, based on experience and qualifications
  • Paid weekly
  • Long-term growth opportunity as responsibilities and proficiency increase
  • Health and life insurance available following the applicable eligibility period
  • California-compliant paid sick leave
  • 40 hours of PTO annually following the applicable eligibility period
  • Company vehicle or mileage reimbursement depending on position requirements and experience
  • Supportive, experienced team with direct access to company leadership
  • Opportunity to play a meaningful role in the growth and development of the company

We are building a company that values accountability, professionalism, initiative, and people who take ownership of their work.
