Construction Finance Manager

A Finance Manager with Construction Experience bridges corporate financial strategy and job-site reality. Because construction uses highly specialized accounting structures, this role requires deep knowledge of project-based job costing, Work in Progress (WIP) schedules, retention tracking, and ASC 606 revenue recognition.

Core Duties & Responsibilities

• Project Accounting & Job Costing WIP Schedule Management: Prepare and analyze monthly Work in Progress (WIP) reports to calculate exact over-billings and under-billings.
• Job Cost Tracking: Monitor labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs against original estimates for every active job.
• Profit Margin Analysis: Conduct variance analysis to flag project cost overruns early and protect project margins.
• Change Order Financials: Audit the financial impact of change orders and ensure they are properly integrated into the billing schedule.

Cash Flow & Billing Management

• Progress Billings Oversight: Manage complex invoicing methods, including AIA progress billings (G702/G703) and percentage-of-completion methods.
• Cash Flow Forecasting: Model weekly and monthly cash inflows and outflows to ensure the company can fund project mobilization and payroll.
• Retainage Tracking: Monitor withheld retention funds from owners and manage retention releases to subcontractors.
• Lien Waiver Compliance: Oversee the collection and issuance of conditional and unconditional lien waivers before releasing vendor payments.

Compliance, Risk & Bonding

• Surety & Bonding Maintenance: Maintain accurate financial statements to support and expand the company's commercial bonding capacity.
• Subcontractor Risk Auditing: Verify subcontractor Certificates of Insurance (COI), workers' comp compliance, and W-9 forms before project kick-off.
• Revenue Recognition: Ensure strict compliance with ASC 606 standards for revenue generated from long-term contracts.
• Tax Coordination: Manage state, local, and construction-specific tax requirements, including sales tax exemptions on materials.

Executive Leadership & Technology

• ERP System Management: Oversee construction-specific accounting and project management platforms like Sage, Viewpoint Vista, or Procore.
• Strategic Advisory: Partner with Project Managers and Executives to review project pipelines, overhead costs, and capital expenditures.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Experience: 5+ years of progressive corporate finance experience, with at least 2–3 years of direct experience in general contracting or subcontracting environments.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. A CPA, CMA, or CCIFP (Certified Construction Financial Professional) is a major plus.
• Technical Mastery: High-level proficiency with complex Excel formulas, pivot tables, and financial modeling for multi-year projects.
