What they need
CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN
PATE Civil & Marine LLC
Mobile County, Alabama
Full-Time Position
PATE Civil & Marine LLC is seeking an experienced, dependable Construction Foreman who can take ownership of projects and work independently without constant supervision.
We perform a wide variety of civil, site, drainage, excavation, erosion-control, and marine construction work throughout Mobile County and surrounding areas. Our projects may include drainage systems, grading, excavation, site preparation, demolition, retaining walls, erosion control, stormwater improvements, aggregate and driveway work, land clearing, bulkheads, and other civil and marine construction.
We are not looking for someone who has to be told every step of what to do.
We need a foreman who can be given the project scope, plans, crew, equipment, and expectations and then take responsibility for getting the job completed correctly, safely, efficiently, and professionally.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The right person should be able to:
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Read a scope of work and understand what needs to be accomplished
- Plan the day's work and determine the best order of operations
- Lead and manage a small construction crew
- Assign tasks and keep employees productive throughout the day
- Operate construction equipment safely and efficiently
- Perform and oversee grading, excavation, drainage, site work, and related construction
- Understand elevations, slopes, drainage flow, and basic site layout
- Recognize problems in the field and make sound decisions without waiting for someone else to solve every issue
- Coordinate materials, equipment, tools, and manpower needed for the job
- Communicate with the office regarding progress, materials, changes, delays, and jobsite issues
- Keep jobs moving and avoid unnecessary downtime
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite
- Protect customer property and existing improvements
- Ensure work meets company standards before considering the job complete
- Take responsibility for the crew, equipment, and quality of work on the project
INDEPENDENCE IS A MAJOR PART OF THIS POSITION
This is extremely important.
We need someone we can trust to send to a project and know that the job is being handled.
You should be comfortable receiving the scope of work and expectations and then running the project without management having to remain onsite or repeatedly tell you what needs to happen next.
A successful foreman should be able to look ahead, anticipate what the crew will need, identify potential problems, communicate when something affects the scope or schedule, and keep the project moving.
We expect our foreman to think like a leader, not wait like an employee.
That doesn't mean making unauthorized changes to a customer's project. It means knowing when you can solve a normal field problem yourself and when something needs to be brought to management's attention.
EXPERIENCE WE VALUE
Experience in several of the following areas is strongly preferred:
- Excavation and earthwork
- Drainage and stormwater systems
- Grading and establishing proper elevations
- Skid steer and compact track loader operation
- Excavator operation
- Tractor and other heavy-equipment operation
- Site preparation
- Land clearing
- Demolition
- Aggregate installation
- Driveway construction
- Retaining walls
- Erosion-control work
- Underground pipe installation
- Concrete or hardscape-related site work
- Bulkhead and marine construction
- Reading plans, measurements, elevations, and construction drawings
You do not have to know everything we do, but you must have solid construction experience, mechanical/common sense, leadership ability, and the ability to figure things out in the field.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
- Have previous construction experience
- Have previous foreman, crew-leader, or equivalent leadership experience
- Be dependable and punctual
- Have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Be able to work outdoors in South Alabama weather conditions
- Be physically capable of working on active construction sites
- Be comfortable operating equipment
- Understand jobsite safety
- Be able to communicate professionally with employees, management, customers, inspectors, subcontractors, and suppliers when necessary
- Be able to document job progress and communicate issues clearly
- Take care of company trucks, trailers, equipment, and tools
- Be willing to work alongside the crew when needed
THIS POSITION IS NOT A GOOD FIT IF:
You need someone standing beside you telling you what to do next.
You regularly wait for instructions instead of looking for the next task.
You are uncomfortable making normal day-to-day jobsite decisions.
You cannot manage employees or hold a crew accountable.
You have difficulty communicating problems before they become expensive problems.
You are looking for an equipment-operator-only position where your responsibility ends when you get out of the machine.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
When we give you a project, we expect you to own it.
Plan the work. Lead the crew. Run the equipment. Solve normal field problems. Communicate when you need something. Protect the customer's property. Keep the project moving. Pay attention to the details. Finish the work correctly.
We want a foreman who takes pride in being the person management can trust to say:
"I've got it."
If you have strong construction experience, can lead people, understand site work, and are capable of running projects independently, we want to hear from you.
