What they need
The City of West Lafayette's (Civil) Engineering Department is seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Construction Inspector to support the successful completion of public infrastructure projects throughout the community.
This position performs field inspections and monitors construction activities to ensure work complies with approved plans, specifications, codes, ordinances, and applicable local, state, and federal standards.
The Construction Inspector works on a variety of municipal infrastructure projects, including streets, sidewalks, trails, stormwater systems, sanitary sewers, water mains, utilities, drainage improvements, and other work within the public right-of-way. The position also reviews right-of-way permit applications and conducts related inspections, with an emphasis on maintenance of traffic, pedestrian access, and accessibility requirements.
In this role, you will work closely with contractors, engineers, utility representatives, city staff, property owners, and residents to address field conditions and construction-related concerns. Responsibilities include reviewing plans and specifications, documenting construction activities, maintaining inspection reports and daily records, verifying completed work and quantities, monitoring roadway and pedestrian closures, and assisting with final inspections and project closeout.
The ideal candidate will have experience in construction inspection, civil construction, public infrastructure, or a related field; strong attention to detail; and the ability to read and interpret engineering plans and technical specifications. Candidates should be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in active construction environments and communicating professionally with contractors, technical professionals, and members of the public.
A high school diploma or GED and at least three (3) years of related experience are required. An associate degree or coursework in civil engineering technology, construction management, or a related field is preferred. Municipal or public works experience and relevant INDOT or construction inspection certifications are also preferred.
