Construction Operations Manager / Project Manager

We are looking for a smart, well-rounded Construction Operations Manager / Project Manager to help manage our growing commercial construction business.

This is not strictly an office Project Manager role, Site Supervisor role, or general labour position.

We need someone with a strong understanding of construction who can manage projects from the time a contract is awarded through to completion — dealing with clients, trades, schedules, drawings, site issues, inspections, deficiencies and day-to-day project operations.

The right person should be organized, confident, business-minded, good with people, and comfortable managing multiple projects at the same time.

You will work closely with ownership and act as our eyes and ears across active construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of construction projects after contract award
• Communicate directly with clients throughout the project
• Prepare, manage and update construction schedules
• Coordinate subcontractors, trades, suppliers and deliveries
• Attend site meetings, client meetings, inspections and walkthroughs
• Read and understand architectural, mechanical and electrical drawings
• Identify site issues, conflicts and deficiencies before they become larger problems
• Coordinate RFIs, changes and site requirements with consultants and trades
• Monitor project progress, workmanship, timelines and overall site conditions
• Manage multiple active projects and competing priorities
• Assist with pricing, estimating, site visits and closing new opportunities when required
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers
• Help improve the overall organization and operations of the construction business
• Be willing to step in and help on-site when necessary — this is not someone who is afraid to get their hands dirty

Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of construction management / project management experience in Ontario or Canada
• Strong knowledge of commercial construction and renovations
• Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and trades
• Ability to read and understand construction drawings
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Comfortable dealing directly with clients, consultants, inspectors and trades
• Able to manage multiple projects at the same time
• Strong communication skills and professional judgment
• Business-minded with the ability to understand both construction and client relationships
• Independent and able to make good decisions without constant supervision
• Full G driver’s licence and reliable own vehicle
• Willing to travel throughout the GTA and Southern Ontario
• Available for occasional evenings and weekends when projects require it
• Experience with medical clinics, dental offices, pharmacies, retail, office or other commercial interior construction is a strong asset.

We are not specifically looking for an architect or engineer. We are looking for someone with broad, practical construction experience who understands how projects actually get built and can manage the people, clients, schedules and problems that come with them.

The ideal candidate is someone who eventually wants to take on significant responsibility within the company and grow into a senior construction operations role.
