What they need
About Peak Construction Group
Peak Construction Group is the construction and development platform of The Peak Group, a vertically integrated real estate investment, development, and construction company headquartered in Texas. Our projects include small bay industrial developments, Build-to-Rent communities, land development, single-family residential construction, and value-add real estate projects.
As our portfolio continues to grow, we are looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented Construction Project Controls Manager to help manage the financial and administrative controls across our construction projects.
Position Summary
The Construction Project Controls Manager will serve as a key link between our Project Managers, construction operations, and accounting team.
Project Managers will establish and manage the construction plan and project budget. This position will help ensure those budgets are accurately entered and maintained in our systems and that costs, commitments, change orders, forecasts, and project information remain current throughout the life of each project.
This is not a traditional accounting position. We are looking for someone who understands construction financials and project administration and enjoys working directly with Project Managers to keep projects organized, on budget, and on schedule.
Primary Responsibilities
Project Setup & Budget Administration
- Work with Project Managers to establish approved project budgets within company systems
- Maintain project cost codes, budget categories, commitments, and related project information
- Ensure projects are properly and consistently set up from the beginning
- Maintain accurate and current project financial information throughout the project lifecycle
Budget & Cost Control
- Monitor project budgets, commitments, actual costs, pending costs, and forecasted costs
- Maintain budget-to-actual reporting across active projects
- Work with Project Managers to identify potential budget variances and cost overruns early
- Help maintain accurate cost-to-complete and projected final cost information
- Track approved budget revisions and changes
Project Manager Coordination
- Work directly with Project Managers to regularly review project financial status
- Ensure budgets, commitments, contracts, change orders, and forecasts remain current
- Follow up on outstanding project information and documentation
- Help create consistency and accountability across project teams
- Assist Project Managers with the administrative and financial side of managing their projects
Accounting Coordination
- Serve as a liaison between construction operations and the accounting team
- Help ensure project costs are recorded against the appropriate projects and cost codes
- Research and resolve discrepancies between project budgets, commitments, invoices, and accounting records
- Provide Accounting with accurate project information needed for reporting
- Assist with project cost reconciliations as needed
Contracts, Commitments & Change Orders
- Track project contracts, purchase orders, commitments, and change orders
- Maintain accurate records of approved and pending changes
- Ensure approved changes are incorporated into project budgets
- Help maintain organized supporting documentation
Project Reporting
- Maintain consistent project cost and budget reports
- Track original and current budgets, costs to date, committed and pending costs, change orders, forecasts, projected final cost, variances, and key schedule milestones
- Provide management with timely visibility into project financial performance
Project Controls & Process Improvement
- Help establish consistent project controls across the organization
- Improve processes for budgeting, cost tracking, reporting, and project administration
- Help ensure Project Managers are using company systems consistently
- Assist management with identifying projects requiring additional attention
- Support the continued development of scalable construction management processes as the company grows
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of experience in construction, development, project controls, project administration, project accounting, or a related field
- Strong understanding of construction budgets, cost codes, commitments, contracts, and change orders
- Experience working with construction project management or accounting systems
- Strong Excel and reporting skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage information across multiple active projects
- Strong communication and follow-up skills
- Comfortable working directly with Project Managers, accounting personnel, and company leadership
Preferred
- Experience working for a general contractor, real estate developer, or vertically integrated real estate company
- Experience with construction project controls or cost management
- Experience with project budgeting and forecasting
- Experience managing project documentation, commitments, contracts, and change orders
- Familiarity with construction accounting and job costing
An accounting degree or CPA is not required.
What We're Looking For
- Extremely organized and detail-oriented
- Takes ownership and follows through
- Understands both the operational and financial sides of construction
- Comfortable holding Project Managers accountable for timely information
- Able to identify inconsistencies before they become bigger problems
- Enjoys improving systems and processes
- Works effectively between construction and accounting
- Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Wants to grow with an entrepreneurial real estate and construction company
This position is ideal for someone who wants to become an important part of the operational infrastructure of a growing construction and development platform, rather than remain in a narrowly defined accounting role.
