Guided by our commitment to Building a Better World, we partner with public agencies, private developers, and community stakeholders to deliver world-class projects with lasting impact.
Job Overview
The Project Engineer (PE) supports project management and field operations on commercial, institutional, civil, and multifamily construction projects. This developmental role is designed for career-minded builders to gain a deep understanding of the full construction lifecycle—strengthening technical, coordination, and management skills to advance within the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Preconstruction & Procurement
Assist with select bids and proposal submissions; review specs, drawings, and scopes thoroughly.
Support buyout activities, vendor outreach, and long-lead item tracking.
Project Controls & Documentation
Own document control for RFIs, submittals, as-builts, logs/registers/schedules, change orders, purchase orders, quantity surveys, O&M manuals, and warranties.
Process shop drawings and manage RFI workflows; track responses and downstream impacts.
Maintain accurate meeting minutes, action logs, weekly reports, status updates, and photo documentation.
Field Support & Coordination
Attend site walks and coordination meetings; observe standard practices for subcontractor oversight.
Support QC/QA, safety observations, and close-out requirements in partnership with field teams.
Serve as an escort in government facilities when required; adhere to all site PPE standards.
Schedule & Cost Awareness
Apply foundational scheduling concepts (critical path, long-lead items); draft updates under PM/PE3 guidance.
Track changes affecting cost and time; assist with forecasting and change management.
Client & Stakeholder Service
Provide timely, professional responses to client inquiries with PM approval.
Model customer-service excellence and help foster strong, repeat-business relationships.
Professional Growth
Seek cross-training and job-sharing with senior PEs; train Level-1 PEs as requested.
Obtain and maintain relevant construction certifications and trainings.
Perform additional duties as assigned to support successful project delivery.
Qualifications
Required
BS in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; or HS diploma and 3+ years of direct commercial construction experience.
Foundational understanding of construction means and methods for commercial/institutional renovations and site work.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); Adobe; internet research.
Clear, professional communication skills (written and verbal).
Reliable transportation; ability to work nights/weekends as project needs require.
Ability to pass government background checks and drug testing (including random).
Preferred
Internship/Co-op experience in GC/CM environments.
Experience with Procore (strongly preferred); familiarity with Bluebeam, MS Project/Primavera P6 a plus.
OSHA-30, CPR/First Aid, USACE CQM, and other construction-related certifications.
Eligibility to obtain/maintain public trust/HSPD-12 clearance when project-required.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Split between office and active job sites; travel between locations as needed.
Regular exposure to construction environments (heavy equipment, noise, dust/fumes); strict PPE compliance required.
Frequent walking/standing; occasional squatting/kneeling; routine review of small print on plans; use of scales/rulers.
Office temperatures may vary; dress in layers as appropriate.
