Construction Superintendent – Monterey County

Location: Monterey County, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position: Construction Superintendent
Industry: Public Works / Commercial Construction

About the Position

We are seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to join our team and oversee construction activities throughout Monterey County. This position will support a growing portfolio of Job Order Contracting (JOC) projects for Monterey County Public Works, Facilities and Parks, including facilities and public infrastructure work.

The ideal candidate lives in Monterey County and is an experienced field leader who can independently manage day-to-day construction operations, coordinate subcontractors and crews, maintain project schedules, enforce safety standards, and communicate professionally with County representatives, project managers, inspectors, and other project stakeholders.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who takes ownership of the job site and understands what it takes to deliver quality work safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

· Serve as the company’s primary field representative on assigned Monterey County projects.

· Supervise and coordinate construction activities from mobilization through completion.

· Direct and coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, labor, equipment, and other project resources.

· Coordinate multiple trades and work activities while maintaining an organized and productive job site.

· Review plans, specifications, Detailed Scopes of Work, drawings, and project requirements.

· Identify and communicate discrepancies, conflicts, omissions, or field conditions that may affect the work.

· Develop and maintain project schedules and monitor progress against required completion dates.

· Coordinate material deliveries, subcontractor schedules, inspections, testing, punch-list activities, and final completion.

· Maintain communication with the Project Manager and County representatives regarding project progress, issues, changes, and field conditions.

· Ensure work is performed in accordance with contract documents, plans, specifications, applicable codes, and project requirements.

· Maintain a safe job site and actively enforce company and project safety requirements.

· Act as the designated site safety monitor when assigned.

· Coordinate required inspections, testing, approvals, and corrective work.

· Monitor quality of workmanship and ensure defective or non-conforming work is identified and corrected.

· Maintain accurate field documentation, including daily project information, photographs, progress information, and other records as required.

· Respond promptly to field issues, emergencies, and changing project conditions.

· Assist the project management team with project closeout, punch lists, inspections, and completion documentation.

· Maintain professional working relationships with County personnel, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and project stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For

Required:

· 5+ years of construction supervision experience.

· Experience managing commercial, public works, institutional, or other complex construction projects.

· Strong understanding of multi-trade construction.

· Demonstrated ability to supervise subcontractors and field personnel.

· Strong knowledge of construction means, methods, sequencing, and job-site coordination.

· Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and schedules.

· Strong understanding of construction safety requirements.

· Excellent communication and organizational skills.

· Ability to manage multiple projects or Job Orders simultaneously.

· Ability to work independently and make sound field decisions.

· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

· Ability to work throughout Monterey County.

Strongly Preferred:

· Experience with public works construction.

· Experience working on County, municipal, state, federal, or other government projects.

· Experience with prevailing wage projects.

· Experience with Job Order Contracting (JOC).

· Experience coordinating multi-trade facility construction, renovation, repair, or infrastructure projects.

· Experience working directly with government project managers, inspectors, and representatives.

· Experience managing projects ranging from smaller service/repair projects through larger construction projects.

· Experience with project documentation, schedules, inspections, and closeout.

The Right Candidate

The successful candidate will be a confident field leader who can walk onto a job site and take ownership of the work. You should be comfortable coordinating several subcontractors and trades, identifying problems before they become delays, maintaining a safe and orderly site, and communicating clearly with both field personnel and management.

Because this position will represent our company directly in the field, professionalism, accountability, reliability, communication, and attention to detail are extremely important.

Normal project hours may generally fall within standard weekday working hours; however, projects may require work outside normal hours, including weekends, holidays, or other scheduled project hours.

The Superintendent must be available to respond to project needs and is expected to maintain communication availability as required by assigned projects.
