Construction Safety Professional

Artifex Engineering Limited is seeking an experienced Construction Safety Professional to be part of our established construction management team on a complex industrial project in Napier. This is a 10-12 month fixed term position, although there will likely be opportunities to stay on at the completion of the assignment and work on other projects.

We specialise in creating, sustaining, and upgrading complex process and production infrastructure. Our clients generally operate in primary production processing, industrial manufacturing and energy generation sectors. This includes power generation, food and beverage, chemicals and fertiliser, wood processing and manufacturing.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking someone who will be boots on the ground, out in the construction zone, building an effective health and safety culture. You will have a natural rapport with constructors and operators alike. You will be comfortable and effective engaging with the workers to look for opportunities to reduce risk, ensure compliance, and when necessary, intervene.

We are not looking for a HSE Manager who wants to be in the office writing plans and policies. This is complex project with an aggressive timeline. We, and our client, are fully committed to a zero harm outcome, and this role is a key part of delivering this.

Requirements include:

• Experience as a safety professional in multi-discipline construction projects within the industrial, processing, energy, oil and gas or mining sectors. If you have not worked in at least one of these sectors, then this job isn’t for you.
• Competency with producing, reviewing or approving safety related documentation such as JSA, work method statements, SSSP, permit to work applications, incident investigations, root cause analysis etc.
• A good understanding of construction risk, in particular, WorkSafe’s construction risk focus areas: vehicles/machinery, fall protection, dust/fume control, and multi‑contractor coordination.
• Knowledge of the work methodologies and controls required to manage complex construction risks such as confined space, heavy or complex lifts, hotwork, explosion and fire, work at height, SIMOPS, plant commissioning etc.
• Qualified permit issuer and receiver
• Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint)
• Understanding the role of safety leadership on delivering great project outcomes and building the culture we are looking for
• A relevant construction safety qualification.
