What they need

Construction Superintendent

Lintel + Cornice Development + Construction | St. Louis, MO

Position Overview

Lintel + Cornice is seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to oversee field operations across multiple residential renovation and historic rehabilitation projects in St. Louis.

The Superintendent will be responsible for coordinating daily construction activities, managing subcontractors and field crews, maintaining project schedules, and ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of craftsmanship. The Superintendent will oversee 4 to 6 active job sites, as well as oversee smaller client projects.

Working closely with company leadership and project managers, the Superintendent will serve as the primary on-site point of contact and take ownership of day-to-day construction operations. While this is primarily a supervisory position, the ideal candidate has substantial hands-on construction experience and is comfortable assisting with field work when circumstances require it.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced builder who knows how to lead people and keep projects moving.

The ideal candidate is hands-on and collaborative, understands construction from the ground up, knows the trades, recognizes quality workmanship, and understands how to sequence work to complete a project successfully.

They can anticipate challenges, make sound decisions in the field, and coordinate multiple crews without losing sight of the details. They lead by example, communicate clearly, and hold people accountable while treating them with respect. They're comfortable directing subcontractors and employees, but equally willing to lend a hand when needed to solve a problem or keep a project on schedule.

Our projects often involve older buildings, unexpected conditions, and complex rehabilitation work. We aren't building tract homes, and no two projects are exactly alike. We're looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, adapts to changing circumstances, and takes pride in delivering quality work.

Most importantly, we want someone who takes ownership of their job sites, works collaboratively with the rest of our team, and understands that good construction management requires both planning and practical field experience.

Primary Responsibilities

Construction Supervision & Field Operations

  • Oversee day-to-day construction activities across multiple active job sites, generally located within a concentrated area of St. Louis City.
  • Direct and coordinate subcontractors, in-house carpenters, laborers, and vendors to ensure productive and efficient field operations.
  • Plan and sequence construction activities, coordinate material deliveries, and ensure job sites are prepared for upcoming trades.
  • Monitor construction schedules, anticipate conflicts or delays, and take appropriate action to maintain project progress.
  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for subcontractors, inspectors, vendors, and other construction personnel.
  • Coordinate required inspections and ensure that work is ready for review.
  • Provide occasional hands-on assistance with construction activities when needed to resolve field challenges or maintain progress.

Quality Control & Problem-Solving

  • Monitor construction quality and ensure work meets project specifications, applicable codes, and company standards.
  • Read and interpret architectural drawings, construction details, and scopes of work.
  • Identify unforeseen conditions, construction conflicts, and potential scope changes, and work with project managers to develop appropriate solutions.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship, with particular attention to the challenges of historic rehabilitation.
  • Coordinate punch-list completion and prepare projects for final inspections and turnover.

Project Coordination & Management Support

  • Maintain regular communication with project managers and company leadership regarding project progress, scheduling, staffing, and field conditions.
  • Identify potential cost impacts, changes in scope, and schedule concerns, communicating them promptly to the project manager.
  • Assist with material purchasing, subcontractor coordination, bid reviews, and scope development as needed.
  • Maintain essential field documentation, including progress photographs, inspection records, and construction updates.
  • Support project managers with scheduling, change orders, and other project administration when necessary.

Team Leadership & Job-Site Safety

  • Establish clear expectations for field personnel and subcontractors regarding productivity, workmanship, safety, and professionalism.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized job sites.
  • Promote compliance with applicable safety requirements and company procedures.
  • Provide guidance and support to less-experienced field staff.
  • Foster a collaborative working environment that values craftsmanship, accountability, and mutual respect.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of construction field experience, including demonstrated experience supervising crews or managing job-site operations.
  • Strong knowledge of residential construction and renovation, including framing, carpentry, building systems, and finish work.
  • Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors, crews, and active projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and scopes of work.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Comfortable using email, scheduling tools, and basic project management software.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Commitment to construction safety and high-quality workmanship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with historic rehabilitation, older buildings, or adaptive reuse.
  • Experience with multifamily residential construction or renovation.
  • Previous experience as a Superintendent, Lead Carpenter, Foreman, or Construction Manager.
  • OSHA 30 certification or willingness to obtain it.
