What they need
Job Summary
The Construction Supervisor oversees the daily on-site operations of retail and commercial mall developments, major structural expansions, and tenant fit-outs. This role provides active leadership to the project engineering team and field staff to ensure all construction activities strictly adhere to engineering designs, safety standards, commercial building codes, and strict timelines. Acting as the primary liaison between engineering teams, architects, general contractors, sub-contractors, and mall management, the Construction Supervisor guarantees quality workmanship while minimizing disruptions to neighboring commercial operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Project Engineering Leadership & Site Operations
- Lead and manage the project engineering team, guiding site engineers and technical staff in executing complex structural and mechanical solutions.
- Oversee day-to-day site operations, directing trade contractors, engineers, laborers, and heavy equipment operators.
- Bridge the gap between engineering design and field execution by reviewing engineering submittals, RFIs (Requests for Information), and technical drawings.
- Monitor project timelines and milestones, making real-time scheduling adjustments to keep engineering and construction deliverables on track.
- Coordinate material deliveries, specialized engineering equipment, and staging areas to maintain an efficient workflow within restricted mall site limits.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Inspect work daily alongside project engineers to ensure strict adherence to engineering specs, municipal building codes, and safety laws.
- Conduct regular site safety briefings (toolbox talks) and enforce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance.
- Identify structural, mechanical, or cosmetic defects early and direct corrective engineering solutions.
- Prepare site for municipal building inspections, fire safety approvals, and final occupancy certifications.
Retail & Mall Coordination
- Coordinate closely with mall operations teams to ensure construction activities do not disrupt operational retail spaces, foot traffic, or tenant delivery bays.
- Manage off-hours construction schedules (e.g., night shifts) required for high-noise or high-impact retail work.
- Enforce mall-specific contractor rules, delivery guidelines, dust control barriers, and noise mitigation policies.
- Oversee individual tenant fit-outs to ensure consistency with overall mall design guidelines and engineering utility hookups.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain detailed daily site logs recording progress, weather conditions, headcount, delays, and site incidents.
- Review contractor change orders, technical site instructions, and progress billing requests for accurate validation.
- Report major project risks, engineering challenges, material shortages, or budget deviations directly to senior leadership.
Skills and Competencies
- Engineering Team Leadership: Proven capacity to lead, direct, and mentor project engineers and site technical personnel.
- Technical Blueprint & Engineering Reading: Expert ability to interpret structural, architectural, civil, and complex MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) drawings.
- Commercial Site Safety: In-depth knowledge of OSHA (or local occupational health and safety standards) and commercial fire/life safety protocols.
- Contractor Management: Strong ability to direct multi-disciplinary teams and resolve technical conflicts on-site.
- Retail Operations Awareness: Nuanced understanding of working within active commercial environments, including logistics, dust isolation, and noise restrictions.
- Problem-Solving & Agility: Quick decision-making skills to address structural challenges or supply chain disruptions.
- Communication: Clear verbal and written reporting capabilities for interfacing with engineering teams, corporate stakeholders, and mall executives.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in commercial construction with a strong background in leading project engineering teams.
- Proven track record of managing mall construction, commercial retail centers, or large-scale tenant fit-out projects.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in project scheduling software (MS Project, Primavera) and engineering/management tools (Procore, AutoCAD, BIM/Revit viewer).
Physical & Working Conditions: Ability to stand, walk, climb scaffolding, and work in varying weather conditions; flexibility to work night shifts and weekends during critical phases.
