Construction Surveyor

Gunter Construction Company is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Construction Surveyor to support our heavy civil construction projects. This position is responsible for performing field measurements, construction staking, site layout, and elevation verification to ensure construction activities are completed accurately and according to project plans and specifications. The ideal candidate will have experience working on concrete paving, grading, and other civil construction projects. This individual will work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and field crews to ensure accurate project layout and efficient operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform construction staking and layout for sidewalks, concrete paving, and grading projects.
• Establish and verify elevations, grades, alignments, and control points.
• Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, site plans, and specifications.
• Operate surveying equipment, including GPS, total stations, laser levels, and other measuring instruments.
• Verify field measurements and identify discrepancies between plans and actual site conditions.
• Perform measurements to verify completed work meets project specifications.
• Maintain accurate field notes, survey records, and layout documentation.
• Coordinate with Project Managers and field personnel to resolve layout or elevation concerns.
• Ensure surveying equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and stored.
• Follow all company safety policies and jobsite procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 3–5 years of construction surveying or field layout experience preferred.
• Experience in heavy civil, streetscapes, or concrete construction strongly preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Experience operating GPS equipment, total stations, and laser levels.
• Knowledge of construction elevations, grades, slopes, and measurements.
• Strong mathematical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with field crews.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on active construction sites.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on uneven terrain.
• Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and work around active construction equipment.
• Ability to perform fieldwork in varying temperatures and weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with surveying equipment.
• Experience with GPS-based construction layout and machine control systems.
• Familiarity with KDOT, MoDOT, and municipal construction specifications.
• Experience with concrete paving, and streetscapes rehabilitation projects.
