What they need

Covered Service is recruiting on behalf of a specialist therapeutic and behavioural Alternative Provision seeking experienced tradespeople and construction professionals who would like to move into teaching.

This is an excellent entry route into education for someone with strong practical knowledge but no previous teaching experience. The provision can train and support the right candidates to become confident vocational tutors.

Construction subjects required

We are particularly interested in candidates who can deliver one or more of the following:

  • Bricklaying
  • Carpentry and joinery
  • Wall and floor tiling
  • Painting and decorating
  • Design and Technology
  • General construction and property maintenance

If you can deliver another practical, vocational or construction-related subject, please list this clearly in your application.

About the role

You will work with small groups of young people who may have SEND, autism, ADHD, SEMH needs, disrupted education or previous difficulties engaging in mainstream school.

Many of the learners have been described as “hard to reach”, but the provision believes every young person can make progress when they receive the right relationships, structure and opportunities.

You will use practical construction activities to help learners develop vocational skills, confidence, discipline, teamwork, resilience and employability skills.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging practical construction sessions.
  • Teaching learners individually and in small groups.
  • Demonstrating tools, materials and construction techniques safely.
  • Breaking tasks into clear and manageable stages.
  • Adapting sessions to meet different abilities and SEND needs.
  • Establishing clear routines, expectations and professional boundaries.
  • Using strong, calm and consistent behaviour-management strategies.
  • Building positive relationships without compromising expectations.
  • Supporting learners who may display challenging, anxious or withdrawn behaviour.
  • Creating a safe and therapeutic learning environment.
  • Assessing learners’ practical work and recording their progress.
  • Supporting learners to complete vocational units and qualifications.
  • Teaching workplace expectations, health and safety and employability skills.
  • Maintaining tools, equipment, resources and safe workshop practices.
  • Working closely with teaching, pastoral, safeguarding and behaviour-support staff.
  • Reporting safeguarding or welfare concerns through the correct procedures.
  • Taking part in training, supervision and professional development.

No teaching experience?

Previous teaching experience is welcomed but is not essential.

If you are an experienced tradesperson with the right attitude, communication skills and commitment to young people, the provision can train you. You must be coachable, willing to receive feedback and ready to develop the specialist skills required to work successfully in Alternative Provision.

The right candidate must be willing to enrol on a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship or relevant specialist teaching qualification, subject to eligibility and the needs of the role. Support may also be available to complete an appropriate assessor qualification.

A comprehensive online training package will be provided, covering the key knowledge and skills required to work effectively in Alternative Provision. This will include areas such as:

  • Safeguarding and child protection
  • SEND awareness
  • Autism and ADHD
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Behaviour management and de-escalation
  • Professional boundaries
  • Health and safety
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Recording and reporting concerns
  • Supporting emotional regulation
  • Working therapeutically with young people

Online learning will be supported by practical guidance, observations, feedback and experience within the provision.

Essential requirements

Applicants must:

  • Have strong knowledge and practical experience in at least one relevant trade.
  • Be able to demonstrate construction techniques safely and clearly.
  • Have strong, calm and consistent behaviour-management skills.
  • Be willing to work with young people who may present challenging or complex behaviour.
  • Be patient, resilient, reliable and emotionally mature.
  • Be able to build positive professional relationships with young people.
  • Be willing to adapt practical sessions for different learning and additional needs.
  • Understand that behaviour is often a form of communication.
  • Be comfortable working in a busy and fast-paced environment.
  • Be willing to undertake training and work towards relevant teaching or assessing qualifications.
  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety and professional-boundary requirements.
  • Be able to work constructively as part of a wider education and pastoral team.

Desirable experience and qualifications

It would be beneficial if candidates have:

  • A recognised qualification in a construction trade.
  • Current or previous industry experience.
  • A teaching, training or assessing qualification.
  • Experience supervising apprentices, trainees or junior workers.
  • Experience working with young people, SEND or vulnerable groups.
  • Knowledge of vocational qualifications and evidence portfolios.
  • Experience managing challenging behaviour.
  • Relevant health and safety qualifications.
  • First-aid training.
  • A CSCS card or other industry certification.

Working patterns

The provision is interested in hearing from candidates seeking:

  • Full-time work
  • Part-time work
  • Sessional teaching
  • Flexible working
  • Evening teaching
  • Work that can be combined with an existing trade or self-employed career

Evening opportunities may suit experienced tradespeople who want to enter education while continuing their daytime employment or business.

Who would this opportunity suit?

This role could be ideal for:

  • An experienced tradesperson considering a career change.
  • A construction worker who enjoys training apprentices or junior colleagues.
  • A retired or semi-retired construction professional.
  • A self-employed tradesperson looking for regular part-time hours.
  • Someone seeking flexible or evening employment.
  • An existing vocational tutor looking to work within a specialist provision.
  • Someone passionate about using practical skills to change young people’s lives.

Safeguarding

The provision is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Appointment will be subject to safer-recruitment checks, including an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, identity and qualification checks, employment-history checks and satisfactory references.

How to apply

Please submit your CV and a short supporting statement explaining:

  • Which construction or vocational subjects you can deliver.
  • Your industry experience and relevant qualifications.
  • Any experience of training, supervising or supporting other people.
  • How you would manage behaviour calmly in a practical workshop.
  • Whether you are seeking full-time, part-time, flexible or evening work.
