Contractor Manager – Taharoa Ironsands Ltd

Taharoa Ironsands Ltd (TIL) is a well-established mining operation on the west coast of the North Island, proudly operating for over 50 years. We are seeking an experienced Contractor Manager to join our team and play a key role in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality contractor performance across our site.

This is a pivotal position working closely with site leadership, responsible for managing all contractor activities across maintenance, operations, and projects.

About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Management team, you will be responsible for overseeing all contractor management functions on site.

You will act as the primary point of contact between TIL and our contractors, ensuring all work is delivered safely, on time, cost-effectively, and to the required standard. You will promote best-practice contractor management,ensuring resources are used efficiently, costs are appropriately managed, and contractors deliver value while meeting TIL’s safety, operational, quality, and performance expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Contractor Management & Performance

• Manage multiple contractors across site in a dynamic operational environment
• Ensure scopes of work are clearly defined, communicated, and delivered
• Monitor performance against schedules, milestones, and quality expectations
• Build strong working relationships with contractors and site teams
• Hold contractors accountable for safety, quality, and delivery outcomes

Quality Assurance

• Conduct site inspections and audits to ensure work meets TIL standards and legislation
• Identify and manage defects, non-conformances, and performance gaps
• Maintain accurate records of contractor performance and outputs
• Provide clear reporting to site leadership on progress, risks, and issues

Cost Control & Commercial Management

• Review and reconcile contractor invoices against completed work
• Manage contractor pricing, negotiations, and contract variations
• Identify opportunities to optimise contractor spend without compromising outcomes
• Support budgeting and forecasting of contractor costs

Health, Safety & Risk

• Promote and lead a strong zero-harm safety culture
• Ensure all contractors are compliant with NZ Health & Safety legislation
• Oversee inductions, documentation, and contractor pre-qualification
• Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions
• Maintain the site contractor register and documentation

About You

You will bring strong leadership, commercial, and operational experience, ideally from mining or heavy industry.

Key Requirements:

• 5–10+ years’ experience in contractor management within mining, heavy industry, maintenance, or construction

• Proven ability to manage multiple contractors and workstreams

• Strong commercial acumen with experience in cost control and negotiations

• Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills

• Experience with systems such as Excel, CMMS, or ERP tools

• Strong knowledge of NZ Health & Safety legislation (Health and Safety at Work Act 2015)

Preferred:

• Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Project Management, Business, or similar
