Black Dog Advisor helps growing businesses understand their finances and make better decisions. We provide bookkeeping, accounting, and fractional CFO services, with a focus on personal service, practical advice, and modern technology. Our clients include construction and project-based businesses that need more than accurate books—they need a financial team they can count on.

As we grow, we’re looking for a hands-on Controller to take ownership of client accounting and financial reporting, support our CFOs, and help build our delivery team.

The Opportunity

You’ll work directly with our founder, senior bookkeeper, and fractional CFOs. Initially, you’ll handle bookkeeping and accounting for selected clients while also building budgets, cash flow forecasts, and financial reports.

As we add clients and bookkeeping staff, your role will expand into managing the team, reviewing their work, and leading day-to-day client delivery. You should be comfortable doing the work today and building the processes and team to support it tomorrow.

What You’ll Own

• Client bookkeeping, month-end close, cleanups, and accurate financial statements.
• Budgets, cash flow forecasts, management reports, and financial analysis.
• Construction accounting, including job costing and project profitability.
• Client communication, deadlines, and follow-through on requests from meetings and CFOs.
• Improvements to workflows using cloud accounting tools, automation, and AI.
• Review, training, and management of bookkeeping staff as the team grows.

What You Bring

• Strong hands-on accounting experience and the ability to independently manage client books.
• Practical experience building budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.
• Knowledge of construction accounting and job costing.
• Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel, plus comfort learning new technology.
• Clear communication, sound judgment, and dependable follow-through.
• An interest in helping build a growing firm and developing others.

Clients receive accurate, timely information and proactive service. Bookkeepers and CFOs have a reliable partner who keeps work moving. Our founder can focus more on growing BDA, knowing client delivery is in capable hands.

Compensation starts at $100,000+ base salary, depending on experience. This is a local, hybrid role requiring three days per week in the office.
