Controller

Birmingham Hide & Tallow Co., Inc., a third-generation family-owned company and leader in rendering, used cooking oil recovery, and grease trap services across the Southeast, is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the company’s financial operations.

Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with multiple plants and terminals throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and surrounding states, we need a strong financial leader who thrives in a multi-location environment and understands cost accounting in a manufacturing and service-based business.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting and financial reporting functions for a multi-location operation
• Lead and strengthen cost accounting processes and margin analysis
• Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual operating statements
• Manage general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and fixed assets
• Develop and maintain internal controls, policies, and procedures
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
• Coordinate with external accountants, tax professionals, and banking partners
• Analyze operational costs and provide actionable insights to the executive team
• Supervise and develop accounting staff
• Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned by the President

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CMA preferred)
• Proven experience as a Controller or similar senior accounting role in a multi-location company
• Strong background in cost accounting, preferably in manufacturing, industrial, or service operations; experience with fleet operations a plus
• Solid understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
• Experience managing or consolidating results across multiple sites or entities
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• High attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel

Preferred

• Experience with Zoho Books (preferred but not required)
• Prior work in a family-owned or mid-sized business
• Familiarity with the rendering, recycling, or environmental services industry is a plus
