What they need

About Edge Fiber

Edge Fiber is a local internet provider building 100% fiber across the Midwest. With more than thirty years of local experience and a team that lives and works in the communities we serve, we deliver multi-gig fiber to towns and rural areas larger providers overlook, backed by people who answer the phone and show up when you need them.

We are a local, entrepreneurial team with decades of experience in the industry. Edge Fiber was built around a simple idea: smaller communities deserve the same quality Internet, technology, and customer experience as larger cities. We take a hands-on approach to operating the business, invest for the long term, and take pride in the communities we serve.

Today, we are building a larger regional broadband platform while maintaining the local presence, accountability, and customer focus that have defined our businesses for decades.

About the Role

We are looking for a Controller who wants to play a meaningful role in our growth. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who can own the fundamentals, including accurate financial reporting, a disciplined close process, internal controls, accounting policies, and compliance, while also building and improving the accounting function as the business scales.

We value people who take ownership, solve problems, improve processes, and are comfortable working in a growing company where they can make a meaningful impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements and management reporting.
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, consolidations, and other core accounting activities.
  • Own accounting policies and processes, including revenue recognition, expense classification, capitalization, fixed assets, and other key accounting judgments.
  • Lead cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing reconciliations, payroll reconciliations, and treasury-related processes.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and establish scalable accounting procedures as the company grows.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and other financial partners, and coordinate annual audit and tax processes.
  • Oversee accounting for fiber construction and other capital projects, including proper capitalization of labor, materials, contractor costs, and other network investments.
  • Partner with operations and construction teams to improve inventory, materials, purchasing, and fixed asset tracking.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and financial analysis in partnership with executive leadership.
  • Support acquisitions, including financial diligence, purchase accounting, integration, and bringing acquired businesses onto the company's accounting processes and systems.
  • Improve and automate accounting workflows, reporting, and systems to reduce manual work and increase accuracy.
  • Build and develop the accounting and finance team as the organization grows.
  • Serve as a hands-on financial leader who is willing to dig into the details, identify problems, and take ownership of getting them resolved.

Who You Are

Required

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including meaningful responsibility for the monthly close and preparation of financial statements.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and a demonstrated ability to apply accounting principles to real-world business decisions.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, accruals, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and internal controls.
  • Experience managing an annual audit and working directly with external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to establish processes, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-moving environment.
  • Comfortable working hands-on in the details while also identifying opportunities to improve processes and systems.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both financial and non-financial teams.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience working with modern accounting and financial systems.

Preferred

  • CPA strongly preferred, with equivalent experience considered.
  • Experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, investment banker, or similar role in a growing middle-market company.
  • Experience in telecom, fiber, infrastructure, or capital-intensive industries
  • Startup or growing-company experience (comfort with limited resources/systems)
  • Experience standing up finance functions from scratch or scaling them through a growth/acquisition phase
  • Experience implementing or improving accounting systems, close processes, reporting tools, and internal controls.

What We're Really Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong accounting fundamentals with an ownership mentality. You should be comfortable getting into the details, understanding how the business actually operates, and taking responsibility for getting things right.

The right person for this role is:

  • Hands-on. You are willing to dig into the general ledger, reconcile an account, investigate a discrepancy, or work through a complicated accounting issue yourself.
  • An owner. When something falls within the finance and accounting function, you take responsibility for seeing it through rather than waiting for someone else to solve it.
  • Accurate and dependable. The organization should be able to trust the numbers, the close calendar, and the commitments you make.
  • A builder. You enjoy taking processes that are manual, inconsistent, or underdeveloped and turning them into something disciplined, scalable, and repeatable.
  • Practical. You understand the difference between financial rigor and unnecessary bureaucracy. You build controls and processes that fit the size and needs of the business.
  • Curious about the business. You want to understand how we build networks, serve customers, purchase materials, manage field operations, and make money, not just how those activities appear in the financial statements.
  • Comfortable with growth and change. You can operate effectively as the company adds markets, systems, people, and acquisitions, even when every process is not yet fully developed.
  • A strong partner. You can work effectively with executives, operations leaders, employees, auditors, lenders, and investors, and can communicate financial issues clearly to people who are not accountants.
  • Low ego and high accountability. You care more about getting to the right answer and helping the company succeed than about who gets credit or where a particular task sits on an org chart.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-paid life and disability coverage
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
